Entry Requirements – NVQ Level 2 Telehandler Operator
The Telehandler NVQ Level 2 is a competence‑based qualification, not a training course. Candidates must already be experienced operators.
You must:
Be actively operating a telescopic handler as part of your normal job role
Hold a red trained operator card (NPORS or CPCS)
Have access to a telehandler and a live working site for assessment
Demonstrate safe working practices and knowledge of relevant legislation
This qualification is ideal for those ready to complete their Red to Blue Card NVQ and achieve recognised competent operator status.
How the Telehandler NVQ Works
This encapsulates the various methods (Observation, Witness Statement, Professional Discussion, and Knowledge Base Question) through which candidates can demonstrate their skills and knowledge to gain the Blue Competent Telescopic Operator Cards.
Observation
- Observation of the candidate operating a Telehandler on a live construction site. The NVQ assessor observes real working activities, including lifting, moving, and placing loads safely, using attachments where required, navigating the site, and operating on gradients or confined areas. All tasks are assessed to ensure safe, competent, and compliant telehandler operation in line with workplace standards.
Witness Statement
- Witness testimony provided by a competent supervisor or mentor with direct knowledge of the candidate’s telehandler operations. The witness confirms regular observation of the candidate’s work, demonstrating safe and effective use of the Telehandler, full understanding of site procedures, machine operation, attachments, and application of work activities carried out as part of normal day-to-day duties.
Professional Discussion
- A professional one-to-one discussion is conducted between the candidate and the NVQ assessor, during which the candidate explains how they meet the required occupational standards for Telehandler operation. The discussion covers the work activities carried out, the methods used to complete tasks safely and efficiently, and the reasoning behind their working practices on site with the Telehandler and attachments.
knowledge base question
- The candidate must demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of safe and competent Telehandler operation, including how it applies to their specific job role. Evidence can be provided either in writing or verbally during a discussion with the assessor. All responses are recorded to confirm the candidate’s comprehension, practical application, and ability to operate the Telehandler safely and efficiently in real workplace scenarios.

Our Experience Is Your Advantage
Hear what our incredible customers have to say about our plant operator courses!
My Dad’s review!: My three (grown up) children gifted me a 13T digger driving experience for my birthday. This has been something I have always fancied giving a go and I was not disappointed! Carlie greeted us on arrival and assisted throughout and was so friendly and helpful. I wasn't rushed at all and she made the whole experience very relaxed and enjoyable. My family were able to watch from a good distance. Thank you so much. I would definitely recommend!

I recently completed a range of courses with Vally Plant Training, including digger, dumper, lifting ops, slinger, plant marshal, and Telehandler I couldn’t be more impressed. From start to finish, the training was top-notch. Carlie and Steve, the instructors, were outstanding. Their knowledge, patience, and hands-on approach made every session engaging and informative. Each course was well-structured, with a great balance of theory and practical work. The equipment was in excellent condition, and the site was professionally run. I came away with valuable skills and certifications that I know will serve me well in the industry. I’m already looking forward to returning for more training in the future. If you're considering plant training, I highly recommend Vally Plant Training—you won’t find better instructors or a more dedicated team.
