Who needs telehandler training?
A telehandler is much more than a forklift with a longer reach.
Its telescopic boom allows loads to be placed at height and forward of the machine, but that versatility also means operators must understand load charts, rated capacity, forward reach, boom extension and stability.
This course is suitable for people using telehandlers, telescopic handlers, telescopic forklifts or rough-terrain telehandlers to unload deliveries, transport palletised materials, stack loads or place materials at height.
Typical candidates around Worcestershire include:
- Construction and groundworks operatives
- Housebuilding teams
- Agricultural and estate workers
- Engineering employees
- Warehouse and yard personnel
- Plant hire operators
- Manufacturing employees
- Experienced operators needing recognised assessment
- Complete beginners entering plant operation
Where a telehandler will be used with a hook or jib to handle a freely suspended load, additional training may be required. See our Telehandler Suspended Loads Training Course.
Why Worcester businesses choose Vally Plant Training
Training several employees does not necessarily mean sending everyone on the same course.
Someone who has never operated a telescopic handler needs structured training. An employee who has operated one competently for years may only need assessment, while a previously qualified operator may benefit from refresher training.
We can help Worcester employers separate those requirements before training begins.
Vally Plant Training provides:
- NPORS approved operator training and testing
- Novice telehandler courses
- Experienced Worker Tests
- Refresher training
- On-site workforce training
- Centre-based courses in Tewkesbury
- In-house certification where appropriate
- Suspended-load training
- Plant Operations NVQ assessment
- CITB Training Provider Network membership
This keeps the training relevant to the person rather than automatically putting every candidate through the longest route.
Which telehandler course do I need?
New to telehandlers? Choose novice training
If you’ve never operated a telehandler, or have only limited informal experience, novice telehandler training is normally the correct starting point.
The course develops machine control gradually while teaching the operator why capacity, stability and load position matter. A complete novice course can take up to five days.
Before booking, our NPORS Novice Training Guide explains how the novice route works and what candidates can expect.
Already operate telehandlers? Consider the experienced test
Competent operators may be able to complete an NPORS Experienced Worker Test (EWT) instead of undertaking novice training.
The telehandler EWT takes approximately 2–3 hours per candidate and assesses existing ability.
Candidates should already be able to carry out pre-use checks, interpret capacity information, manoeuvre the machine, position the boom and handle loads safely without being taught how to do so during the assessment.
If you’re uncertain whether you have enough experience, read our NPORS Experienced Worker Test Guide.
Previously trained? Refresher training may be more suitable
Operators who already have previous training but need to update their knowledge can undertake telehandler refresher training.
This may suit someone returning to telehandler operation after time away, an operator whose employer has identified a training need or someone who wants to refresh safe operating practices.
See our NPORS Refresher Training Guide for further information.
What will I learn on a telehandler course?
Telehandler training combines practical machine operation with the knowledge required to make safe decisions before and during a lift.
Depending on the candidate’s route, training can cover pre-use checks, controls, manoeuvring, load handling, stacking and de-stacking, load charts, rated capacity, boom extension, gradients, stability, attachments, visibility, defect reporting and safe shutdown.
The aim is not simply to teach someone how to drive the machine.
A competent operator must also understand whether the telehandler can safely handle the intended load in the position it needs to reach.
Understanding telehandler load charts
One of the most important parts of telehandler operation is learning how to use a telehandler load chart.
A machine might be described as having a maximum lifting capacity of several tonnes, but that figure does not mean it can lift the same weight at every height and forward reach.
Before attempting a lift, the operator needs to consider:
- Weight of the load
- Load centre
- Required lift height
- Required forward reach
- Boom angle and extension
- Attachment fitted
- Machine configuration
As the load moves farther forward, the forces acting on the machine change and the amount that can be safely lifted may reduce considerably.
Our Telehandler Stability and Load Chart Guide explains how boom extension, load position, machine configuration and ground conditions affect capacity.
Why using the correct load chart matters
The load chart needs to apply to the actual machine and attachment combination being used.
An operator should never simply assume that the capacity chart for standard forks also applies when another attachment is fitted.
Changing an attachment can alter the machine’s:
- Rated capacity
- Load centre
- Centre of gravity
- Forward reach
- Visibility
- Stability
This becomes particularly important when telehandlers are used with buckets, lifting hooks or jibs.
Our Telehandler Attachments Guide explains how different attachments can change the way a telehandler must be operated.
Telehandler stability on construction and agricultural sites
Telehandlers are regularly used away from perfectly level concrete surfaces.
Across construction and agricultural workplaces in Worcestershire, operators may encounter soft ground, slopes, crossfalls, potholes, recently backfilled areas and changing surface conditions.
These conditions matter because stability is affected by much more than the weight of the load.
Operators also need to consider tyre condition and pressure, steering, travelling speed, boom position, gradients and how far the load is positioned from the machine. Raising or extending the boom increases the importance of these factors.
Read our Telehandler Stability Guide for further information about slopes, ground conditions, load position and overturn risks.
Using different telehandler attachments
Telehandlers are increasingly used as versatile material-handling machines rather than solely for moving pallets.
Depending on the workplace, attachments can include:
- Forks
- Buckets
- Grabs
- Hooks
- Jibs
- Agricultural attachments
- Specialist material-handling equipment
An attachment physically fitting onto a telehandler does not automatically mean the machine is suitable to use it for every operation.
The attachment must be compatible with the machine, and the operator needs the appropriate capacity information and competence for the configuration being used.
Read our Telehandler Attachments Guide for more information.
Using a telehandler for suspended loads
Putting a pallet on forks and hanging a load beneath a telehandler are very different operations.
A freely suspended load can swing and rotate, introducing movement and additional forces that are not present when a load is supported directly on the forks.
The machine and lifting attachment must be suitable for the operation, the correct capacity information needs to be available and the lifting operation must be properly planned.
Operators carrying out this type of work can complete our Telehandler Suspended Loads Training Course.
You can also read our Telehandler Suspended Loads Guide covering machine suitability, lifting attachments, capacity and lift planning.

NPORS or in-house telehandler training?
Businesses do not all require the same certification.
NPORS Telehandler Training is generally the appropriate choice where an operator requires recognised external certification or an Operator Card for work across different employers, contractors or sites.
An in-house training certificate can be suitable for employees operating company machinery within their employer’s own controlled working environment, provided that route is accepted by the employer, client, site and insurer.
An in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Read our In-House Training vs NPORS Accredited Training Guide before deciding which option your business requires.

How much does telehandler training cost in Worcester?
The price of a telehandler course depends on the operator’s experience, training route, number of candidates and where the training takes place.
An experienced operator who is ready for assessment requires considerably less time than someone who has never used the machine before.
Current centre options start from £360 + VAT, while novice training is priced according to the training required.
On-site training in Worcester is quoted separately because candidate numbers, travel, machine availability, site requirements and the combination of novice, experienced and refresher candidates can affect the booking. Discounts may be available for multiple candidates or businesses arranging several training categories.
Assessment and certification
Telehandler assessment tests both underpinning knowledge and practical ability.
Candidates need to demonstrate that they can prepare the machine for work, understand its controls, use the relevant capacity information, manoeuvre safely and carry out the required load-handling activities.
For full information about NPORS certification and operator card options, visit our NPORS Telehandler Training Course.
CITB funding for telehandler training
Eligible employers may be able to access CITB funding towards qualifying telehandler training, subject to current eligibility and funding requirements.

Your Frequently Asked Questions Answered
The cost depends mainly on whether you are a complete beginner, an experienced operator or require refresher training.
Experienced operators may be suitable for a shorter assessment route, while beginners require structured novice training. See our NPORS Telehandler Training Course for current centre options.
You must use the correct load chart for the particular machine, attachment and configuration.
A machine’s headline maximum capacity does not mean it can lift that weight at every boom height or forward reach.
Our Telehandler Stability and Load Chart Guide explains this in more detail.
As a load is moved farther forward, the forces acting on the machine change and its available lifting capacity can reduce.
The operator must therefore check the appropriate load chart for the required height and forward reach, rather than relying on the machine’s maximum stated capacity.
yes.
An attachment can alter the machine’s capacity, load centre and stability. Operators should use the manufacturer’s capacity information applicable to the actual machine and attachment combination.
Read our Telehandler Attachments Guide.
Yes, provided there is a suitable machine, safe practical training area and the equipment needed to complete the required exercises.
Agricultural businesses should also tell us about any specialist attachments their operators use so the training requirement can be discussed before booking.
A suitable telehandler can be used for certain suspended-load operations when the machine, approved lifting attachment, capacity information and lifting arrangements are appropriate.
This is different from normal fork-mounted load handling.
See our Telehandler Suspended Loads Training Course and Telehandler Suspended Loads Guide.
Yes, if they are genuinely competent.
An Experienced Worker Test assesses existing ability and takes approximately 2–3 hours per candidate.
If you are unsure whether you’re ready, check our NPORS Experienced Worker Test Guide before booking.
Uneven ground can significantly affect machine stability.
Operators need to consider slopes, crossfalls, soft areas, potholes, tyre condition and the position of the boom and load. The machine must remain within the manufacturer’s operating limitations.
Our Telehandler Stability Guide covers these factors in more detail.
Not automatically.
Attachments can change capacity, visibility, load centre and machine handling characteristics. Operators need to be competent for the equipment and configuration they actually use.
See our Telehandler Attachments Guide.
Experienced operators following the applicable construction card route can progress towards a Blue Competent Operator Card by completing the appropriate Plant Operations NVQ and meeting the relevant card requirements.
Vally Plant Training can carry out the NVQ assessment in the workplace while the operator performs their normal telehandler duties.
