What Does Telehandler Training Cover?
Telehandler training combines essential theory with practical machine operation without unnecessarily turning the page into a long course syllabus.
Depending on the candidate’s route, training can cover pre-use inspections, machine controls, manoeuvring, load assessment, load charts and rated capacity, safe lifting and placing, boom extension, stacking and de-stacking, ground conditions, gradients, machine stability, visibility, defect reporting and safe shutdown.
Operators also learn why the machine’s capacity changes as the boom is raised or extended and why the correct load information, attachment and machine configuration matter.
Telehandler Stability and Ground Conditions
Telehandler stability is particularly important because raising and extending the boom changes the position of the load in relation to the machine.
Operators need to consider the weight and load centre, boom extension, boom height, attachment, tyre condition, travel speed, steering and supporting ground.
This is especially relevant on construction and development sites where ground can change as excavation, backfilling, rainfall and repeated plant movements take place. A machine that is stable with a pallet close to the carriage may have considerably less available capacity when the same load is raised or extended forwards.

Telehandler Attachments and Different Types of Work
Telehandlers are versatile machines and may be fitted with equipment other than standard forks.

NPORS or In-House Telehandler Training?
Businesses do not always require the same certification route.

NPORS is generally suitable where recognised NPORS registration or an Operator Card is required.
In-house certification can be appropriate where employees operate company machinery within their employer’s own working environment, provided that certification is accepted by the employer, client, site and insurer. An in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
