Is this the right course?
A Slinger Signaller works directly with suspended loads and lifting equipment. The role can involve selecting lifting accessories, attaching loads, checking load security, controlling loads during movement and giving clear instructions to the lifting equipment operator.
This is different from general banksman or traffic marshal duties.
The course is relevant to people working around cranes, excavators used for lifting, telehandlers carrying suspended loads and other suitable lifting equipment.

Novice Slinger Signaller training
If you’ve never worked as a Slinger Signaller, choose the novice course.
The Swindon novice route is 2 days with a maximum of 3 candidates.
Training gives candidates time to learn how to assess a load, select suitable accessories, attach and secure loads, communicate with the operator and control the load throughout the lifting operation.

Experienced Worker Test
Already carrying out slinging and signalling duties competently?
You may be suitable for an Experienced Worker Test rather than novice training.
The experienced route is 1 day with a maximum of 6 candidates. Candidates should already understand lifting accessories, load characteristics, signalling and safe load control because the assessment is designed to test existing competence.

What will I learn?
Slinger Signaller training combines lifting theory with practical load-handling exercises.
Depending on the candidate’s route, subjects can include lifting accessories, pre-use checks, Working Load Limits, load weight and centre of gravity, sling selection, sling angles, attaching loads, recognised hand signals, radio communication, exclusion zones, controlling suspended loads and safely landing loads.
Candidates also develop an understanding of their responsibilities within the wider lifting team.
Understanding lifting accessories
Choosing a sling because it “looks strong enough” isn’t acceptable.
The Slinger Signaller needs to consider the load, lifting points, configuration and capacity of the equipment being used.
Lifting accessories can include:
- Chain slings
- Web slings
- Wire rope slings
- Shackles
- Hooks
- Eyebolts
- Other purpose-designed accessories
The equipment needs to be identifiable, suitable for the load and in an acceptable condition.

Load weight, balance and centre of gravity
Knowing the load weight is only part of preparing it for lifting.
The Slinger Signaller also needs to consider where the centre of gravity sits and how the chosen lifting points will affect the load as tension comes onto the slings.
An awkward or unevenly distributed load can tilt or rotate as it leaves the ground.
This is why good slinging practice involves assessing the load before committing to the lift rather than trying to correct a badly balanced load once it is already suspended.
Sling angles and Working Load Limits
Sling configuration matters.
The forces acting through individual sling legs can change as the angle changes, so the Slinger Signaller needs to understand how the planned configuration affects the lifting accessories being used.
This is covered as part of selecting suitable equipment rather than simply checking that a sling has a capacity greater than the total load weight.
Slinger Signaller hand signals
The person operating the lifting equipment needs clear and unambiguous instructions.
Candidates learn recognised signals for the movements relevant to lifting operations and when alternative communication, such as radio, may be required.
Only the agreed signaller should normally direct the operator, although an emergency stop signal must be acted upon where danger is identified.

Working with the lifting team
The Slinger Signaller doesn’t work in isolation.
Depending on the lifting operation, the wider team may include an Appointed Person, Lift Supervisor and lifting equipment operator, each with different responsibilities.
Understanding those boundaries is important.
The Slinger Signaller should be able to work to the agreed lifting arrangements and recognise when something has changed sufficiently that the operation should not simply continue.

PPE for Slinger Signaller training
Candidates should arrive with suitable PPE for the site and practical lifting activities.
This will normally include safety boots, high-visibility clothing, safety helmet and suitable workwear. Gloves, eye protection, hearing protection and any additional site-specific PPE should also be provided where required.
Training at our Tewkesbury centre

NPORS or in-house Slinger Signaller training?
Some employers require recognised NPORS certification, while others may need training specifically for employees carrying out defined duties within their own workplace.
Where appropriate, Vally Plant Training can provide in-house certification as an alternative training route.
An in-house certificate isn’t the same as an NPORS Operator Card, and acceptance depends on the employer, client, site and insurer. For workers moving between construction sites or employers, recognised NPORS certification is generally the more portable option.
CITB funding
Eligible CITB-registered employers may be able to access CITB funding towards qualifying Slinger Signaller training, subject to current eligibility and funding requirements.
