Which Slinger Signaller training route do I need?
Novice Slinger Signaller training
If you are new to lifting operations or do not yet have the experience required to work independently as a Slinger Signaller, the novice course is the correct starting point.
Novice training is delivered over 2 days with a maximum of 3 candidates.
The course gives candidates time to develop both knowledge and practical ability, rather than trying to learn the role purely for an assessment.

Experienced Worker Test
Already sling loads and communicate with lifting equipment operators as part of your normal work?
Experienced candidates may be suitable for the 1-day Slinger Signaller Experienced Worker Test, with a maximum of six candidates.
This is an assessment route. Candidates should already possess the necessary practical ability and underpinning knowledge before attending.

What will I learn?
Slinger Signaller training combines lifting knowledge with practical exercises.
Depending on the candidate’s route, training can cover Slinger Signaller responsibilities, lifting accessories, pre-use checks, load weight, centre of gravity, lifting points, Working Load Limits, sling configurations, hand signals, communication, attaching and detaching loads, exclusion zones, controlling suspended loads and safely landing loads.
The aim is to understand the complete operation rather than simply memorise a sequence for the test.
Lifting accessories – more than choosing a sling
One of the most important parts of the Slinger Signaller role is knowing whether the equipment between the machine and the load is suitable.
Common lifting accessories include:
- Chain slings
- Webbing slings
- Round slings
- Shackles
- Hooks
- Master links
- Lifting beams
- Purpose-designed lifting points
A sling isn’t suitable just because it physically fits around the load.
The Slinger Signaller may need to consider the load, lifting points, configuration, accessory condition, identification and Working Load Limit before the lift begins.

Understanding WLL, sling angles and load weight
Knowing that a load weighs two tonnes doesn’t automatically tell you which lifting arrangement is suitable.
The forces within a multi-leg sling arrangement can change according to how it is configured and the angles involved. Candidates therefore need to understand why the Working Load Limit (WLL) matters and why the complete lifting arrangement must be considered rather than looking at one number in isolation.

Centre of gravity and load stability
A load that appears secure while sitting on the ground can behave very differently once its weight transfers onto the lifting accessories.
If the lifting points or sling arrangement do not properly account for the centre of gravity, the load can tilt, rotate or become unstable as it is raised. A Slinger Signaller therefore needs to think about how the load is likely to behave before giving the instruction to lift.
This is one of the reasons practical Slinger Signaller training is so important. Safe slinging is about understanding the load, not simply attaching equipment to it.
Hand signals and clear communication
Good communication between the Slinger Signaller and lifting equipment operator is essential.
The operator needs to know who is directing the lift and the instructions must be clear enough that there is no uncertainty about the required movement. Depending on the lifting operation, communication may involve recognised hand signals, radio communication or an agreed combination of both.
Where communication is lost or becomes unclear, the safe response is to stop until it has been restored.

Working to a lift plan
The Slinger Signaller is an important member of the lifting team, but does not plan every aspect of the operation alone. The lift may involve an Appointed Person, Lift Supervisor, machine or crane operator and Slinger Signaller, with each person carrying different responsibilities.
The Slinger Signaller needs to understand the agreed lifting method and work within it rather than changing the operation without proper consideration.
