Which Slinger Signaller Course Do I Need?

New to the role – Novice Training

If you’ve never worked as a Slinger Signaller, the 2-day novice course gives you structured instruction before assessment.

Novice training is limited to a maximum of three candidates, giving delegates practical time working with loads, lifting accessories and signalling.

Already experienced – Experienced Worker Test

The 1-day Experienced Worker Test (EWT) is intended for people who can already carry out Slinger Signaller duties competently.

Up to six experienced candidates can be assessed.

It isn’t a shortcut for somebody new to the role. If you need to be taught how to sling loads, select accessories or communicate with the operator, novice training is the more appropriate route.

Existing Slinger Signaller – Refresher Training

Refresher training is available for suitable existing Slinger Signallers who need to revisit knowledge or practical skills. This may include sling selection, equipment checks, signalling, load control and general safe lifting practice.

What Will I Learn?

Slinger Signaller training combines lifting knowledge with practical load-handling exercises.

Depending on the candidate’s route, training can cover Slinger Signaller responsibilities, lift plans, lifting accessories, pre-use checks, load weight and centre of gravity, lifting points, Working Load Limits, sling configurations and angles, recognised hand signals, radio communication, attaching loads, trial lifts, suspended-load control, exclusion zones and safely landing loads.

The aim is to understand why a lifting arrangement is safe, rather than simply memorising enough information to pass an assessment.

Why Lifting Accessories Matter

Choosing the correct lifting accessory is an important part of the Slinger Signaller’s job.

A chain sling, web sling or shackle shouldn’t be selected simply because it happens to fit.

Candidates need to consider factors such as the load, lifting points, configuration, accessory capacity and condition before the lift begins. Pre-use checks also matter. Obvious damage, deformation, wear, cuts, missing identification or damaged components can be reasons not to use an accessory.

Assessment and NPORS Certification

Candidates complete the relevant theory and practical assessment for their chosen route.

The practical assessment is there to demonstrate competence — including safe preparation, accessory selection and use, communication and control of the load — rather than simply testing whether somebody can remember terminology.
