Train Your Plant Banksmen at Your Own Workplace
Need several employees trained to safely assist the movement of excavators, dumpers, telehandlers or other construction plant? Vally Plant Training can deliver Plant Marshal training at suitable sites and workplaces across Gloucester, reducing unnecessary workforce travel and time away from the job. Our nearby Tewkesbury training centre is also available for individuals and smaller bookings.
Plant Marshal Training in Gloucester
For a Gloucester company with several employees who need Plant Marshal or Plant Banksman training, travelling to our Tewkesbury centre is not automatically the best option simply because it is close by.
If you have suitable plant and a safe practical training area, we can come to you.
This can work particularly well for groundworks companies, civil engineering contractors, housebuilders, plant hire businesses, utilities, industrial sites and other Gloucester employers with several people who regularly work around moving construction machinery.
Instead of sending employees away individually, training can be organised around your workforce and, where appropriate, the plant and working environment they already know.
For a single candidate or smaller booking, our nearby Tewkesbury centre may be the simplest route. For a larger group, on-site delivery can be more practical once travel, employee downtime and multiple per-person bookings are considered.
We also consider discounts for multiple bookings, so tell us how many people you need trained rather than assuming every candidate has to be booked separately at the standard individual rate.

Why Bring Plant Banksman Training to Your Gloucester Site?
When several employees need Plant Marshal training, the real cost to a company is more than the individual course fee.
There can also be mileage, travelling time, employee downtime and the practical problem of taking several people away from an active project or workplace. That is why on-site Plant Banksman training in Gloucester can be worth considering even though our Tewkesbury centre is relatively close.
Where your workplace provides a suitable environment, our instructor can come to you and deliver the appropriate Plant Marshal training or assessment at your site.
This can work particularly well for:
- Groundworks and drainage contractors
- Civil engineering companies
- Construction and housebuilding businesses
- Plant hire companies
- Utilities and infrastructure contractors
- Highway and maintenance teams
- Industrial workplaces
- Waste and recycling businesses
- Warehousing or large sites operating mobile plant
- Employers with several workers requiring the same course
It also means the practical element can take place in an environment that reflects the type of machinery and plant movements your employees encounter at work.
On-Site Training Can Make Better Sense for Larger Groups
If several employees need Plant Banksman training, bringing the instructor to your workplace can reduce travel, mileage and time away from the job. We price customer-site training separately and can also look at discounts where several candidates or multiple courses are being booked together.
What Does a Plant Marshal Do?
A Plant Marshal, often called a Plant Banksman, assists with the safe movement of construction plant and mobile machinery. The role is particularly important when an operator has restricted visibility or needs assistance manoeuvring around people, structures, other machinery or confined working areas.
A Plant Banksman may work alongside equipment such as:
- 360 excavators
- Mini excavators
- Forward tipping dumpers
- Telehandlers
- Loading shovels
- Ride-on rollers
- Tracked plant
- Material handlers
- Other mobile construction machinery
The Plant Marshal needs to stay visible to the operator while remaining clear of the machine’s danger areas.
Good Plant Marshal training therefore involves much more than simply memorising a set of hand signals.
Plant Banksman or Vehicle Banksman?
A Plant Banksman or Plant Marshal is primarily concerned with construction plant and mobile machinery such as excavators, dumpers and telehandlers.
A Vehicle Banksman generally deals more specifically with workplace vehicles, HGVs, deliveries, reversing vehicles and traffic movements.
Some of the basic safety principles overlap, but employers should choose the course that reflects what their employees actually do. If your Gloucester employees mainly guide construction plant, Plant Marshal training is the relevant route.
If their role mainly involves HGVs, road vehicles and workplace traffic, our separate Vehicle Banksman Training course is more appropriate.
Which Plant Marshal Training Route Do You Need?
Novice Plant Marshal Training
The novice route is for candidates who are new to Plant Marshal duties or do not yet have enough practical experience to proceed directly to assessment.
Training develops an understanding of the role before candidates apply that knowledge during practical exercises. This is often a suitable route when a Gloucester employer is selecting members of an existing workforce to take responsibility for helping control construction plant movements.
Read our NPORS Novice Training Guide to see if this is the correct route for you or your employees.
Experienced Plant Marshal Test
Someone who already carries out Plant Banksman duties regularly may be suitable for the Experienced Worker Test.
This is an assessment route for genuinely experienced candidates and should not be used as a shortcut for somebody who still needs instruction.
If you are booking several employees and are unsure who is suitable for the experienced route, tell us about their current experience when enquiring.
Read our Experienced Worker Test (EWT) Guide to see if you have enough experience to do the Test Only Route.
Plant Marshal Refresher Training
Refresher training is available for previously trained Plant Marshals who need to update their knowledge, revisit practical techniques or demonstrate continued competence.
Employers may request refresher training because of their own competence-management procedures, changes in working practices, a period away from the role or findings from site observations and risk assessments.
Read all about the Refresher Training with our Guide on the refresher training route.
What Will Candidates Learn?
Plant Marshal training develops the knowledge and practical skills required to assist construction plant movements safely.
Training can cover:
- Plant Marshal roles and responsibilities
- Health and safety responsibilities
- Hazards associated with mobile plant
- Operator visibility and blind spots
- Safe Plant Banksman positioning
- Recognised hand signals
- Communication with machine operators
- Controlling reversing and manoeuvring operations
- Excavator slewing hazards
- Plant and pedestrian interface
- Exclusion zones
- Safe distances from machinery
- Restricted working areas
- Site traffic arrangements
- Hazard identification
- Emergency procedures
- Knowing when to stop an unsafe movement
A competent Plant Marshal also needs to understand the limits of the role. A banksman cannot make an unsafe site arrangement safe simply by standing next to a machine.
Plant and Pedestrian Safety
One of the biggest risks around mobile construction plant is the interaction between machinery and people.
Where reasonably practicable, site arrangements should minimise the need for pedestrians to enter areas where plant is travelling, reversing or slewing.
Depending on the workplace, controls may include designated pedestrian routes, barriers, crossing points, exclusion zones, traffic plans and suitable supervision. The Plant Marshal works as part of that wider safe system of work.
Working Around Excavators and Telehandlers
Construction plant creates different risks depending on the machine being used.
An excavator operator must consider more than the direction of travel. The upper structure can slew, attachments can move through a wide working area and blind spots can change according to machine position.
Telehandlers introduce different visibility, manoeuvring and load-handling issues. A Plant Banksman therefore needs to understand where not to stand just as clearly as where they should position themselves.
The aim is to maintain clear communication without placing the banksman inside the machine’s hazard area.
Training Several Plant Marshals in Gloucester?
If you need several employees trained, speak to us before booking individual centre places.
When four, five or six candidates need the same course, on-site training may provide better overall value, particularly once you consider travelling time, mileage and employee downtime.
We also look at multiple candidate and multiple course discounts.
For an accurate quotation, tell us:
- Number of candidates
- Previous Plant Marshal experience
- Existing cards or certificates
- Whether NPORS or in-house certification is required
- Type of plant available
- Gloucester site postcode
- Preferred dates
- Any additional plant courses required
We can then advise whether novice training, refresher training or experienced assessment is the most suitable route.
Understand what is required to carry out training or tests on your site with our on-site training requirements guide.
Centre Training or On-Site Training – How Pricing Works
We believe training prices should be clear and transparent.
The prices published on our main Plant Marshal Course pages are for training or testing carried out at the Vally Plant Training centre in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.
For Plant Marshal training, current centre prices start from:
- Experienced Worker Test: £235 + VAT per person
- Novice Plant Marshal Course: £285 + VAT per person
- NPORS Card and Registration: £45 + VAT per person where applicable
These are centre-based prices.
If several employees are attending, discounts may be available for multiple bookings, particularly where several candidates or more than one plant course are being booked together.
For businesses wanting us to come to their Gloucester workplace, on-site training is quoted separately. Customer-site training is normally priced around a day rate, taking into account:
- Gloucester site location
- Number of trainees
- Novice, refresher or experienced route
- Number of training days required
- Plant and facilities available
- Travel requirements
- Any applicable mileage or accommodation
- Additional courses being booked
For a larger group, the overall cost can work out better than paying separate per-person centre prices once business travel and employee downtime are considered.
We will always quote the actual requirement rather than presenting one fixed on-site price that may not suit your booking.
Training at Our Tewkesbury Centre
If you only have one candidate, a smaller booking or do not have suitable facilities for training at your Gloucester workplace, our Tewkesbury centre is a convenient alternative.
For complete course details, current centre pricing and certification information, visit our main NPORS Plant Banksman Training Course page.
The main course page provides the full national course information and transparent pricing for training carried out at our site. For Gloucester candidates, the centre is particularly convenient because it is located close to Junction 9 of the M5.
Ashchurch for Tewkesbury railway station is also approximately a five-minute walk from the training centre, providing another option for candidates travelling without a car.
On-Site Plant Marshal Training Requirements
If we are delivering training at your Gloucester workplace, the course needs to take place in a suitable and controlled environment.
Requirements can include:
- Suitable plant machinery
- Plant in safe working condition
- Operator manuals where required
- Relevant inspection and maintenance documentation
- Safe practical manoeuvring area
- Appropriate risk assessments and method statements
- Separation from unrelated site activity
- Candidate PPE
- Photo identification
- Any additional equipment required for the practical exercises
We will confirm the site requirements before attending or read our on-site training requirement guide.
Plant Marshal Training Across Gloucester
On-site training is available throughout Gloucester and the wider Gloucestershire area where suitable facilities are available.
This can include businesses and projects around:
- Gloucester
- Quedgeley
- Hardwicke
- Brockworth
- Barnwood
- Churchdown
- Innsworth
- Longlevens
- Hucclecote
- Surrounding Gloucestershire areas
Training can take place at permanent workplaces, yards or suitable construction sites. The important point is that Gloucester businesses have a genuine choice between bringing us to their workplace or using our nearby training centre.
Gloucester Construction, Groundworks and Industrial Businesses
Plant Marshal training can be relevant across a wide range of Gloucester workplaces.
That includes:
- Groundworks
- Housing developments
- Civil engineering projects
- Drainage and utilities
- Commercial construction
- Industrial premises
- Logistics and distribution sites
- Plant yards
- Highway works
- Waste and recycling sites
- Infrastructure projects
The need for a Plant Banksman should always reflect the actual work being carried out, the site risk assessment and the controls required around moving plant.
NPORS or In-House Plant Marshal Certification?
NPORS Plant Marshal Training
The NPORS route is appropriate where an employer, client, principal contractor or site requires recognised operator certification.
Successful candidates complete the applicable training and assessment before receiving the relevant NPORS certification.
In-House Plant Marshal Training
Vally Plant Training can also provide in-house Plant Marshal training and certification where an NPORS Operator Card is not required.
This can suit employers that need documented evidence of instruction, training and competence for their own health and safety arrangements, internal training records or insurance and HSE requirements.
An in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Acceptance depends on the employer, site, client, principal contractor and insurer, so requirements should be confirmed before choosing the in-house route.
Assessment and Certification
Candidates following the NPORS route complete the required theory and practical assessment.
The assessment is designed to establish whether the candidate understands their responsibilities and can assist plant movements safely.
Practical assessment can include:
- Safe positioning
- Communication with operators
- Recognised hand signals
- Hazard identification
- Blind spot awareness
- Exclusion zone management
- Safe plant guidance
- Practical site awareness
Successful candidates receive the appropriate NPORS Ticket or certification for the route completed.
CITB Funding
Vally Plant Training is a CITB Training Provider Network Member.
Eligible CITB-registered employers may be able to access funding towards qualifying Plant Marshal training, subject to current CITB rules and eligibility requirements.
If your Gloucester company is CITB registered, mention this when requesting your quotation.
Why Gloucester Businesses Choose Vally Plant Training
Vally Plant Training is a direct specialist plant training provider, not a training-course booking broker. You deal directly with the company arranging and delivering your training.
For a Gloucester employer, we can discuss:
- How many candidates need training
- How experienced they are
- Whether novice, refresher or EWT is suitable
- Whether NPORS or in-house certification is required
- Whether your workplace is suitable
- Whether on-site or centre-based training offers the best value
- Whether other plant courses are also required
- Whether a multiple-booking discount can be applied
That means we can look at the complete training requirement rather than simply selling every employee the same individual course.
