NPORS Plant Banksman Training

Need to safely guide excavators, dumpers, telehandlers or other construction plant on site? Vally Plant Training provides practical NPORS Plant Banksman Training for people responsible for controlling plant movements and helping operators manoeuvre safely around construction sites and other working areas.

Also commonly searched for as Plant Marshal Training, the course covers the practical skills needed when working around moving plant, including banksman hand signals, operator communication, blind spots, safe positioning, exclusion zones, pedestrian safety and hazard awareness.

Training is available at our dedicated centre in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, or we can deliver on-site Plant Banksman Training throughout the UK.

Is This the Plant Banksman Course You Need?

This course is designed for people who need to guide or control the movement of construction plant such as:

  • 360 excavators
  • Dumpers
  • Telehandlers
  • Loading shovels
  • Ride-on rollers
  • Material handlers
  • Other mobile construction plant

If an operator cannot clearly see the area around the machine, a competent Plant Banksman can provide guidance and help maintain a safe working area.

If you mainly guide HGVs, lorries, vans or delivery vehicles rather than construction plant, our Vehicle Banksman Training course is likely to be more appropriate.

If you’re unsure, tell us what machinery or vehicles you guide at work and we’ll help you choose the correct course or visit our NPORS Course page for the most popular courses we offer.

How Long Does Plant Banksman Training Take?

Our Plant Banksman course is typically completed in one day.

The appropriate route depends on your previous experience.

Novice candidates receive training before assessment, while experienced Plant Banksmen or Plant Marshals who already carry out the role may be suitable for an experienced assessment route approx. 2-3 hours.

Why Choose Vally Plant Training?

Plant Banksman Training should be practical.

A banksman needs to understand how large construction machinery moves, where an operator’s blind spots are and where it is safe — and unsafe — to stand.

Our training therefore combines theory with practical exercises rather than simply teaching candidates a set of hand signals.

Vally Plant Training offers:

  • NPORS accredited Plant Banksman Training
  • Practical training around construction plant
  • Novice training
  • Experienced worker assessment
  • Refresher training
  • Training at our Tewkesbury centre
  • On-site company training nationwide
  • Group bookings
  • Experienced plant instructors
  • Help choosing the correct training route

What Is Plant Banksman Training?

Plant Banksman Training teaches candidates how to safely guide and assist operators moving construction plant around a workplace.

A Plant Banksman is also frequently referred to as a Plant Marshal.

The role becomes particularly important where an operator has restricted visibility or where plant is working close to people, structures, excavations, other machinery or restricted working areas.

The banksman needs to understand the movement of the machine and maintain clear communication with the operator.

It isn’t simply a case of standing nearby and pointing where the operator should go.

What Does a Plant Banksman Do?

The exact role will depend on the site and type of machinery, but typical Plant Banksman duties can include:

  • Guiding construction plant
  • Assisting operators during reversing
  • Guiding machines through restricted areas
  • Using recognised hand signals
  • Maintaining communication with the operator
  • Identifying hazards before movement starts
  • Understanding plant blind spots
  • Maintaining exclusion zones
  • Keeping pedestrians away from moving machinery
  • Maintaining a safe position
  • Stopping plant movement if conditions become unsafe

A good Plant Banksman needs to think ahead.

They should be looking at where the machine is going, not simply where it is at that moment.

Why Is Plant Banksman Training Important?

Construction plant can have substantial blind spots.

Even an experienced operator may not have a clear view of everything around an excavator, dumper, telehandler or loading shovel.

The problem becomes greater on busy sites where machines, groundworkers, vehicles and pedestrians are working in the same area.

A trained banksman can help the operator carry out a movement safely, but only if the banksman understands where to position themselves and how the machine is likely to move.

The banksman should never become another hazard for the operator to avoid.

Plant Banksman Training for Excavators

Excavators present particular challenges for a banksman because the upper structure can rotate independently of the tracks or wheels.

This creates areas around the machine where people can be struck or trapped.

A Plant Banksman working with an excavator needs to understand:

  • Operator visibility
  • Machine slew
  • Counterweight movement
  • Tail swing
  • Track or wheel movement
  • Attachments
  • Excavations
  • Restricted working areas
  • Exclusion zones

The banksman should remain in an agreed safe position where communication with the operator can be maintained.

Plant Banksman Training for Dumpers

Dumpers are another common machine requiring careful control on construction and groundworks sites.

The banksman may assist where a dumper needs to reverse, approach an excavation, enter a restricted area or manoeuvre around other machinery.

The banksman needs to consider the dumper’s direction of travel, blind spots, ground conditions, pedestrians and any nearby edges or excavations.

Plant Banksman Training for Telehandlers

Telehandlers combine vehicle movement with a boom and load-handling system, creating different hazards from a normal road vehicle.

When guiding a telehandler, the banksman needs to understand the machine’s movement, operator visibility and the additional space required for manoeuvring.

Particular attention should be given to pedestrians, structures and other plant within the working area.

Which Plant Banksman Course Do I Need?

Novice Plant Banksman Training

Our novice course is suitable for people with little or no previous Plant Banksman or Plant Marshal experience.

Candidates are introduced to the role, responsibilities, hazards and communication methods before completing practical exercises.

The novice course is normally completed in one day.

Experienced Plant Banksman Assessment

The experienced route is intended for people who already carry out Plant Banksman duties and can demonstrate the required knowledge and practical competence.

It is an assessment route for genuinely experienced candidates rather than a shortcut for somebody who still needs training.

If you’re unsure whether you have enough experience, speak to us before booking.

Plant Banksman Refresher Training

Refresher training is available for previously trained Plant Banksmen who need to update their knowledge or practical skills.

It can also be useful where an employer wants to reinforce site procedures and safe working practices.

What Will I Learn on the Plant Banksman Course?

Course content can include:

  • Plant Banksman responsibilities
  • Plant Marshal duties
  • Construction plant hazards
  • Machine blind spots
  • Recognised banksman hand signals
  • Communication with plant operators
  • Safe positioning
  • Exclusion zones
  • Pedestrian segregation
  • Reversing plant
  • Restricted working areas
  • Hazard identification
  • Site conditions
  • Emergency stop procedures
  • Practical plant guidance

The course is intended to give candidates a clear system for controlling plant movements rather than relying on improvised signals or shouting instructions to an operator.

Plant Banksman Hand Signals

Clear communication between the Plant Banksman and plant operator is essential.

Both people need to understand the signals being used before movement begins.

During practical training, candidates learn how to give clear signals and position themselves where the operator can see them.

Signals should be deliberate and unambiguous.

If the operator becomes unsure what the banksman is asking them to do, the movement should stop.

Construction Plant Blind Spots

Large items of construction plant can have areas around them that the operator cannot see clearly from the cab.

The size and position of these blind spots varies considerably between machines.

An excavator has different visibility limitations from a dumper, telehandler or loading shovel.

Attachments and machine configuration can also affect visibility.

A Plant Banksman therefore needs to understand the particular machine they are guiding rather than assuming every item of plant behaves in the same way.

Safe Positioning of a Plant Banksman

One of the most important parts of banksman training is learning where not to stand.

The banksman must avoid placing themselves:

  • Between moving plant and a fixed structure
  • Within the machine’s slew radius
  • Behind plant where the operator cannot see them
  • Close to excavation edges
  • In front of moving machinery
  • Inside an uncontrolled exclusion zone
  • Between two items of moving plant

The correct position depends on the machine and movement being carried out.

The banksman should remain visible to the operator without putting themselves in the path of the machine.

What Is a Plant Exclusion Zone?

An exclusion zone is an area established to keep people away from a particular hazard or work activity.

When construction plant is operating, an appropriate exclusion zone can help prevent pedestrians and other workers entering the machine’s danger area.

The size and arrangement of the exclusion zone will depend on the plant, work activity and site conditions.

A banksman may play an important role in maintaining the area, but everyone working nearby also needs to understand the site rules.

What Happens if the Operator Loses Sight of the Banksman?

The plant should stop.

This is one of the most important rules when guiding construction machinery.

If the operator can no longer see the banksman, or either person becomes unsure about the signal being given, movement should not simply continue.

Communication needs to be re-established before the operation resumes.

Practical Plant Marshalling Training

The practical part of the course gives candidates the opportunity to guide plant in a controlled environment.

Exercises can include:

  • Assessing the work area
  • Identifying hazards
  • Establishing an exclusion zone
  • Agreeing signals with the operator
  • Taking up a safe position
  • Guiding forward movement
  • Guiding reversing plant
  • Directing changes of direction
  • Monitoring surrounding hazards
  • Maintaining visibility
  • Stopping the machine
  • Responding when communication is lost

Where training is carried out on a customer’s site, suitable machinery relevant to the candidates’ normal working environment can be used.

Plant Banksman vs Plant Marshal

In the construction industry, Plant Banksman and Plant Marshal are often used to describe the same or very similar duties.

Employers and sites may use different job titles.

What matters is that the person has been trained and assessed for the duties they are actually expected to carry out.

This page therefore uses both terms naturally because people looking for this type of training commonly search for Plant Banksman Training and Plant Marshal Training.

Plant Banksman vs Vehicle Banksman

Although the basic principles of safe positioning and communication are similar, the roles should not simply be treated as identical.

A Plant Banksman generally guides construction plant such as excavators, dumpers, telehandlers and loading shovels.

A Vehicle Banksman generally guides workplace vehicles such as HGVs, lorries, delivery vehicles and vans.

Construction plant can move and operate differently from road-going vehicles, which is why the training should match the equipment being guided.

See our Plant Banksman vs Vehicle Banksman Guide.

Plant Banksman vs Traffic Marshal

A Traffic Marshal may have broader responsibilities for managing traffic routes, deliveries, access and pedestrian movements around a site.

A Plant Banksman is more directly concerned with safely guiding the movement of construction plant.

There can be some overlap depending on the workplace, but the job title alone should not determine the training required.

The actual duties should.

Plant and Pedestrian Safety

One of the biggest risks on busy construction sites is the interaction between moving plant and people on foot.

Where possible, plant and pedestrians should be kept apart using appropriate site controls.

These can include:

  • Designated pedestrian routes
  • Barriers
  • Crossing points
  • Exclusion zones
  • One-way systems
  • Signs
  • Site rules
  • Suitable lighting
  • Restricted access areas

A Plant Banksman can support these controls when machinery needs to move through a difficult area, but using a banksman should not replace good site planning.

How Is Plant Banksman Training Assessed?

Candidates need to demonstrate both knowledge and practical competence.

Assessment can include understanding hazards, communication methods, safe positioning and the correct procedures for guiding construction plant.

During practical assessment, candidates need to show that they can safely communicate with the operator and control the movement without placing themselves or other people at unnecessary risk.

Simply knowing the hand signals isn’t enough.

NPORS Plant Banksman Certification

Successful candidates completing the appropriate course and assessment can receive the applicable NPORS Plant Banksman certification.

The appropriate registration or card route should be established before training so that the certification matches the candidate’s circumstances and employer or site requirements.

If you’re unsure which option you need, speak to us before booking.

On-Site Plant Banksman Training

We provide on-site Plant Banksman Training throughout the UK for companies that have suitable construction plant and a safe practical training area.

This can be particularly useful where several employees need training.

Using your own machinery also allows the practical training to reflect the equipment candidates are likely to work around after the course.

Before training, we will confirm what needs to be available.

On-Site Training Requirements

For on-site Plant Banksman Training, suitable arrangements should normally include:

  • Appropriate construction plant
  • Competent plant operator
  • Safe practical training area
  • Relevant operator manuals
  • Risk assessments
  • Method statements or safe systems of work
  • Suitable PPE
  • Candidate photo identification
  • Appropriate site controls

Additional requirements may apply depending on the plant and workplace.

Had an amazing experience day with Nick, who was a great instructor and took me from zero experience to fairly confidently (but slowly!) moving soil around in various ways, all whilst keeping a strong focus on safety and the potential hazards of operating heavy machinery. Cathy was also great, and helped organise the day for me. All around positive experience delivered by a small family business and I would definitely do a training course here if I were to do one!
