Candidates therefore need to understand recognised hand signals and when other agreed communication methods, such as radio communication, are appropriate.
Instructions should be:

Understanding Lifting Accessories
Slinger Signallers regularly work with lifting accessories such as:

Slinger Signallers therefore need to maintain suitable control while remaining clear of dangerous positions.
Personnel should never place themselves where they could become trapped between a suspended load and another object.
Working as Part of a Lifting Team
A lifting operation can involve several different roles.
Depending on the complexity of the lift, these may include:

- Lift Supervisor

Each role has different responsibilities.
Slinger Signaller Training is therefore not the same as Lift Supervisor Training or Appointed Person Training.

NPORS Slinger Signaller Assessment
Candidates undertake the appropriate theory and practical assessment for their route.
The current course content includes theory assessment covering lifting legislation, accessories, hazards, communication and operator responsibilities, together with practical assessment involving equipment inspection, sling selection, load attachment, communication, directing operations and safe landing.
Successful candidates follow the appropriate NPORS certification/card route applicable to their booking.
CITB Funding
Eligible CITB-registered employers may be able to claim funding towards qualifying Slinger Signaller Training, subject to current CITB grant rules and eligibility.

There is no single legal document called a “Slinger Signaller licence”, but employers must make sure anyone involved in slinging and signalling is properly trained and competent for the work they carry out.
Many construction sites and principal contractors require recognised evidence of competence. An NPORS Slinger Signaller Operator Card is one recognised route for demonstrating that the operator has completed the appropriate training and assessment.
The terms are sometimes mixed up on site, but the jobs can be very different.
A Slinger Signaller is involved in lifting operations, including selecting and attaching suitable lifting accessories, controlling loads and communicating with the lifting equipment operator.
A Plant Banksman or Plant Marshal is primarily concerned with safely directing plant and vehicle movements.
If your job involves slinging suspended loads, you should make sure the training you book actually covers Slinger Signaller duties, rather than assuming a general banksman course covers the same work.
Yes. You don’t need to already work as a Slinger Signaller to take the novice route.
Our novice Slinger Signaller course takes up to two days with a maximum of three candidates, allowing time for both theory and practical exercises.
If you’re completely new to the role, novice training is the correct route rather than attempting an Experienced Worker Test.
Yes. Understanding the load is a fundamental part of safe slinging.
A Slinger Signaller may need to consider the load weight, centre of gravity, lifting points, sling configuration, sling angles and Working Load Limit (WLL) before selecting and attaching lifting accessories.
This is why Slinger Signaller training involves considerably more than simply learning crane hand signals.
Sling angles affect the forces acting through the legs of a sling. As the angle changes, the load imposed on the sling legs can increase significantly.
A competent Slinger Signaller therefore needs to understand the planned sling configuration rather than choosing lifting accessories based only on the total weight of the load.

Slinger Signallers need to be able to give clear, recognised signals to the lifting equipment operator where hand signals form part of the communication system.
Signals can cover movements such as hoisting, lowering, travelling and stopping, including an emergency stop.

The agreed signalling arrangements should be clear, and the operator needs to know who is authorised to provide directions. Anyone should, however, be able to communicate an emergency stop where an immediate danger is identified.
Yes. For experienced people working within lifting operations, Lift Supervisor can be a natural progression route.
The roles are different. A Slinger Signaller concentrates on activities such as preparing, attaching and controlling loads and communicating with the operator, while the Lift Supervisor has responsibility for supervising the lifting operation in accordance with the lift plan.
