Which Roller Course Do I Need?

I’m New to Ride On Rollers

If you’ve never operated a roller before, or only have very limited experience, the novice Ride On Road Roller course is the appropriate starting point.

Training is 3 days with a maximum of 3 candidates.

The course gives candidates time to develop safe operating skills before assessment, including machine checks, controls, manoeuvring, compaction techniques and hazard awareness.

I Already Operate Road Rollers

If you regularly use ride-on rollers at work and can already demonstrate competent operation, you may be suitable for an Experienced Worker Test.

The NPORS N214 experienced route takes 1 day with a maximum of 6 candidates.

This is not a shortcut for somebody who needs training. An experienced candidate should already understand pre-use inspections, controls, safe manoeuvring, compaction techniques, machine stability and relevant hazards.

I’ve Been Trained Before but Need Updating

Operators sometimes need to refresh their skills rather than repeat a complete novice course.

Ride On Road Roller refresher training can be appropriate following time away from the machine, changes in equipment or working methods, an employer competence review or where an operator simply needs practical skills brought back up to standard.

Road Roller Operation Is About More Than Driving

Ride-on rollers can look straightforward to operate. The machine may spend much of its working day travelling backwards and forwards over a relatively small area. But simply being able to drive a roller doesn’t make somebody a competent roller operator. The purpose of the machine is controlled and effective compaction.

Operators need to understand how their technique can affect the work, including:

• Rolling speed
• Number of passes
• Overlap
• Layer thickness
• Material
• Moisture
• Machine weight
• Drum configuration
• Use of vibration

A consistent rolling pattern can be just as important as controlling the machine safely.

Vibrating Roller & Compaction Roller Training

People searching for training don’t always call the machine a Ride On Road Roller. You may know it as a vibrating roller, vibratory roller, compaction roller or simply a road roller. Many machines use vibration to increase the compaction force transferred through the drum.

These are two separate NPORS categories and must be completed as separate courses and assessments. Booking both does not turn them into a combined NPORS course.

Don’t Have a Roller? Train at Our Tewkesbury Centre

If you’re an individual looking for roller training near Bristol, you don’t need to own or hire a machine just to attend the course.
