What is Plant Mover Training?

Plant Mover Training focuses on the safe relocation of heavy machinery around construction sites and industrial workplaces without carrying out productive excavation or lifting activities.

Machines commonly covered include:

  • 360 Excavators
  • Mini Excavators
  • Site Dumpers
  • Telehandlers
  • Ride-On Rollers
  • Wheeled Loaders
  • Skid Steer Loaders
  • Compact Track Loaders
  • Agricultural Machinery
  • Other construction plant equipment

Although moving machinery may seem routine, operators must understand site hazards, machine limitations, traffic management, and safe operating procedures.

Why Plant Movement Training is Essential

Moving heavy equipment around active workplaces presents significant risks if carried out incorrectly.

Potential hazards include:

  • Collisions with pedestrians
  • Contact with structures or utilities
  • Machine overturning
  • Restricted visibility
  • Working on uneven ground
  • Unsafe reversing
  • Damage to expensive machinery
  • Poor site traffic management

Professional NPORS Plant Mover Training teaches operators how to recognise these hazards and apply safe working methods that reduce risk and improve efficiency.

Well-trained operators help businesses achieve:

  • Better site safety
  • Increased productivity
  • Lower repair costs
  • Improved traffic management
  • Fewer workplace incidents
  • Enhanced operational performance

HSE Guidance for Plant Operators

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) expects employers to ensure operators receive suitable information, instruction, training, and supervision before using construction plant.

Training develops understanding of:

  • Safe systems of work
  • Hazard identification
  • Dynamic risk assessment
  • Operator responsibilities
  • Communication procedures
  • Emergency planning

Competent operators are a key part of maintaining safe and legally compliant workplaces.

PUWER and Operator Competence

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to ensure work equipment is:

  • Appropriate for the intended task
  • Properly maintained
  • Operated by competent individuals
  • Used within safe systems of work

Plant Mover Training helps employers meet these obligations by ensuring operators understand both the practical and legal responsibilities associated with moving heavy machinery.

What Does the Course Include?

Our NPORS Plant Mover course combines theory and practical instruction to develop safe, confident operators.

Training topics include:

  • Health & Safety legislation

  • Machine controls and familiarisation

  • Site traffic management
  • Safe manoeuvring techniques
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Reversing safely
  • Operating on slopes and uneven terrain
  • Communication and signalling

  • Safe mounting and dismounting
  • Driving and manoeuvring exercises
  • Negotiating confined spaces

Your Frequently Asked Questions Answered

NPORS N132 Plant Mover Training is for people who need to start, manoeuvre, position, park and shut down plant safely without carrying out the machine’s normal productive work. This can include moving machinery around a depot, workshop, storage yard, construction site or maintenance area.

Plant Mover Training does not qualify someone to carry out normal operating duties such as excavating, lifting, grading or loading materials. Anyone undertaking productive work must be appropriately trained and competent for that specific machine category and activity.

Depending on the workplace requirement and available equipment, training may involve excavators, dumpers, rollers, telehandlers, loading shovels, material re-handlers, crushers, screeners or other suitable plant. Tell us which machines your employees need to move when requesting a quotation.

Yes. A current manufacturer’s operator manual must be available for each machine used during training or assessment. Different machines have different controls, limitations and safety procedures. Training may be delayed or stopped if the appropriate manual cannot be produced.

Yes. Plant Mover Training is commonly completed by workshop technicians, mechanics, HGV drivers, delivery drivers, yard operatives and plant-hire employees who need to reposition machinery but do not carry out its normal operating functions.

The course can include awareness of positioning and preparing machinery for loading, but it is not the same as training someone to load and secure plant for road transport. Employees responsible for loading, restraint systems or securing machinery may also need Plant Loader Securer Training.

Training covers communication, blind spots, pedestrian interaction and the use of appropriate assistance when visibility or space is restricted. Where employees regularly guide machinery movements, separate Plant Banksman Training may be appropriate for the people directing those movements.

Candidates should already have genuine experience safely moving the relevant types of machinery. They must be able to complete the theory and practical assessment without coaching and may be asked about their operating history, previous training and machines used. Candidates without sufficient experience may be redirected to refresher or novice training.

Yes. Training can be delivered at a suitable Gloucester workplace using machinery relevant to your operation. You will need appropriate plant, operator manuals, RAMS, completed inspections, a safe manoeuvring area, welfare facilities and suitable PPE. Check our On-Site Plant Training Requirements before booking.
