Plant Loader Securer training for Gloucester businesses

Gloucester has a strong mix of construction, engineering, manufacturing, logistics, plant hire and machinery businesses, with equipment regularly moving between depots, projects and customer sites throughout Gloucestershire and beyond.

For the businesses making those movements, safe transport begins long before the vehicle reaches the road. Plant needs to be prepared, loaded under control, positioned correctly and secured using equipment suitable for the machine and transporter.

Vally Plant Training provides Plant Loader Securer Training in Gloucester for employees responsible for these duties.

The course is particularly relevant to:

  • Plant hire companies
  • Construction contractors
  • Groundworks businesses
  • Civil engineering companies
  • Machinery dealers
  • Plant delivery drivers
  • HGV drivers transporting plant
  • Equipment hire businesses
  • Industrial and engineering companies
  • Depot and yard teams

This location page focuses specifically on employers requiring Plant Loader Securer training in Gloucester. Full national course and certification information is available on our NPORS Plant Loader Securer Training Course.

On-site Plant Loader Securer training in Gloucester

Plant Loader Securer training is delivered at suitable customer sites only. Training is not carried out at our Tewkesbury training centre for this category. Workplace delivery means candidates can undertake practical exercises using equipment relevant to the company’s actual plant transport operation.

Depending on the business, this may include:

  • Excavators
  • Dumpers
  • Ride-on rollers
  • Telehandlers
  • Other mobile plant
  • Plant trailers
  • Low loaders
  • Transport vehicles
  • Loading ramps
  • Chains
  • Load binders
  • Tensioners
  • Ratchet straps
  • Other appropriate restraints

This is particularly useful for Gloucester plant hire and construction businesses operating their own transport fleet. Employees can develop their skills around equipment they recognise rather than training on an unrelated transporter before returning to a completely different arrangement at work.

Suitable facilities and equipment must be available before the instructor arrives. See our On-Site Plant Training Requirements for further information.

Training several plant transport employees in Gloucester?

Plant loading responsibilities often extend beyond one person. A company may have a delivery driver responsible for the transporter, an operator moving the machine and yard staff assisting with equipment preparation.

Other businesses have several drivers who independently collect and deliver machinery throughout the week. On-site company training can help establish a consistent approach across the workforce.

Depending on their duties, employees may need to understand:

  • Preparing the loading area
  • Transporter positioning
  • Plant pre-use checks
  • Loading ramps
  • Machine movement
  • Correct positioning
  • Load distribution
  • Selecting securing equipment
  • Applying restraints
  • Final security checks
  • Safe unloading

The novice course allows a maximum of 3 candidates, while the Experienced Worker Test can accommodate a maximum of 6 suitably experienced candidates.

Which Plant Loader Securer course do I need?

Novice Plant Loader Securer training

The novice course is 2 days with a maximum of 3 candidates.

It is suitable for candidates who possess the required plant-moving competence but need structured instruction in safely loading and securing machinery.

Candidates receive theory and practical training covering the complete operation rather than concentrating only on applying restraints. This gives them the opportunity to understand why decisions about the loading area, machine position, weight distribution and securing arrangements are important. The small candidate ratio also allows each person to participate in practical exercises.

Read our NPORS Novice Training Guide for further information about novice training.

Experienced Worker Test

The 1-day Experienced Worker Test is available for a maximum of 6 candidates.

This route is intended for personnel who already regularly carry out plant loading and securing operations and can demonstrate the necessary competence without significant instruction. It is a test-only route rather than a shortened training course.

Someone may have years of experience driving a transport vehicle but still have limited responsibility for actually positioning and securing plant. Experience should therefore relate to the duties being assessed.

Our NPORS Experienced Worker Test Guide explains the experienced assessment route in more detail.

Refresher training

Refresher training can be appropriate for previously trained personnel who need to update or reinforce their skills.

This could include employees returning to plant transport duties after a period away, personnel using different transport equipment or employers who have identified a need to improve existing loading and securing practices. The appropriate refresher requirement can be discussed when arranging the course.

Important prerequisite – Plant Mover competence

Before undertaking Plant Loader Securer training, candidates must already hold a Plant Mover certificate or equivalent evidence of competence in moving plant machinery. The reason is straightforward.

A person cannot safely learn how to load machinery onto a transporter if they are not already competent to move the machine involved.

Plant Loader Securer training develops the additional skills required to:

  • Prepare for loading
  • Approach the transporter
  • Load the machine
  • Position it correctly
  • Select appropriate restraints
  • Secure the machine
  • Complete transport checks
  • Unload safely

It does not replace basic plant-operating competence. Where employees need to develop this first, see our Plant Mover Training Course.

What will I learn?

NPORS N120 Plant Loader Securer training develops the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for plant transport operations.

Course content can include:

  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Relevant legislation and guidance
  • Planning loading and unloading operations
  • Hazard identification
  • Risk assessment
  • Preparing the working area
  • Transporter and trailer checks
  • Plant pre-use checks
  • Loading ramp inspection
  • Controlled plant movements
  • Loading plant onto transport vehicles
  • Correct machine positioning
  • Load weight and distribution
  • Stability considerations
  • Identifying suitable securing points
  • Selecting appropriate restraint equipment
  • Chains
  • Load binders
  • Tensioning equipment
  • Ratchet straps where appropriate
  • Securing movable machine components
  • Preventing movement during transport
  • Preparing the vehicle for travel
  • Final security checks
  • Safe unloading procedures
  • Theory assessment
  • Practical assessment

Preparing the plant and transporter

Safe loading starts with preparation. Before machinery is moved towards a transporter, the candidate needs to consider whether the plant, transport equipment and surrounding area are suitable for the operation.

This may include checking:

  • Machine condition
  • Transporter condition
  • Loading ramps
  • Available securing points
  • Restraint equipment
  • Ground conditions
  • Space available
  • Pedestrian movements
  • Vehicle movements
  • Overhead restrictions

Discovering a damaged ramp or unsuitable restraint once the machine is already partly loaded creates unnecessary problems. Preparation should identify foreseeable issues before the operation starts.

Loading plant onto trailers and low loaders

Loading a machine onto transport equipment can change the way it behaves. The operator may have to approach narrow ramps, travel up an incline and pass through a change in gradient before reaching the transporter deck. The machine therefore needs to remain aligned and under control.

Candidates need to consider:

  • Approach position
  • Ramp alignment
  • Ramp condition
  • Controlled speed
  • Steering inputs
  • Machine stability
  • Visibility
  • Keeping people clear
  • Final positioning

Trying to rush the operation to save a few minutes can create considerably greater delays if the machine becomes badly positioned or the loading operation has to be abandoned.

Plant positioning and load distribution

A machine should not simply be parked wherever there appears to be enough room. Its position forms part of the transport arrangement.

Factors can include:

  • Machine weight
  • Transporter capacity
  • Axle loading
  • Load distribution
  • Centre of gravity
  • Restraint angles
  • Available securing points
  • Transport dimensions

This is especially relevant to Gloucester businesses transporting a range of equipment. A transporter may carry a roller on one journey, a dumper on another and an excavator later in the week. Each machine needs to be considered on its own characteristics.

Chains, binders, straps and load restraint

After the machine has been positioned, suitable restraints need to be selected and applied. Plant Loader Securer training covers securing equipment such as:

  • Chains
  • Load binders
  • Tensioners
  • Ratchet straps where appropriate
  • Suitable attachment and restraint equipment

Candidates need to consider whether the equipment is appropriate for the load and in suitable condition.

They also need to understand:

  • Correct securing points
  • Restraint direction
  • Tension
  • Equipment limitations
  • Machine movement
  • Final inspection

A restraint is only useful if the complete securing arrangement is appropriate for the plant being transported.

Securing excavators for transport

Excavators are commonly transported by plant hire, groundworks and construction businesses around Gloucester.

Preparing an excavator for transport may require consideration of:

  • Tracks or wheels
  • Upper structure
  • Boom
  • Dipper
  • Bucket
  • Attachments
  • Machine position
  • Manufacturer’s requirements
  • Suitable securing points

The exact transport configuration depends on the particular machine. Operators should not assume that the procedure used for one excavator automatically applies to another.

Securing dumpers, rollers and other plant

Other types of plant create different considerations.

Dumpers

The operator may need to consider the skip, articulation where applicable, machine orientation and components capable of movement.

Ride-on rollers

Machine weight, drum configuration, transporter position and securing points all need consideration.

Telehandlers

Boom position, carriage, attachment and the manufacturer’s transport requirements may affect how the machine is prepared.

Other machinery

The correct method should be based on the individual machine, its weight and configuration, the transporter and the available restraint system.

Preventing load movement during transport

Plant needs to remain secure once the vehicle is moving.

Road transport can subject machinery to forces caused by:

  • Braking
  • Acceleration
  • Cornering
  • Direction changes
  • Uneven road surfaces

Correct positioning and restraint work together to control movement. Employees should understand why a particular securing arrangement is being used rather than simply copying what somebody else has done previously.

Plant and securing equipment inspections

The condition of the equipment involved can directly affect the safety of the operation.

Before use, employees should be prepared to identify obvious problems with:

  • Plant machinery
  • Transporters
  • Trailers
  • Loading ramps
  • Chains
  • Straps
  • Binders
  • Tensioners
  • Securing points

A restraint that is visibly damaged should not remain in use simply because it has previously held a load. Safety-critical defects need to be reported and dealt with appropriately.

Read our Plant Defect Reporting Guide for more information about machinery and equipment defects.

Final checks before the journey

Once loading and securing are complete, an appropriate final check should confirm that the plant is ready for transport.

Depending on the machinery involved, this may include:

  • Machine position
  • Restraint security
  • Chain or strap tension
  • Securing points
  • Boom or attachment position
  • Movable components
  • Loose equipment
  • Loading ramps
  • Transporter equipment

The objective is to identify anything that could compromise the transport operation before the vehicle leaves the workplace.

Plant Loader Securer training for Gloucester industry

Gloucester’s location around the M5 and A40 makes the area an important base for construction, engineering, logistics and machinery businesses operating throughout Gloucestershire and further afield.

Plant can regularly be moved between depots and projects around Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, the Forest of Dean and the wider South West and Midlands.

On-site Plant Loader Securer training can be arranged at suitable workplaces around:

Quedgeley • Hardwicke • Hempsted • Barnwood • Hucclecote • Brockworth • Innsworth • Churchdown • Gloucester Business Park • Waterwells and surrounding Gloucestershire areas.

Training at the employer’s premises reduces unnecessary travel for employees while allowing practical exercises to be completed using equipment relevant to the company’s own operation.

NPORS N120 Plant Loader Securer certification

Plant Loader Securer is the NPORS N120 category.

Vally Plant Training is an NPORS Approved Training Provider and provides both training and assessment for suitable candidates. The appropriate certification route will depend on where the employee works and the requirements of employers, clients and sites.

NPORS certification provides recognised evidence that the candidate has completed the relevant training or assessment for the category. For more information about NPORS cards and certification routes, read our Complete NPORS Guide.

In-house Plant Loader Securer training in Gloucester

Some Gloucester businesses need employees trained specifically for their own internal plant loading and transport activities rather than requiring an NPORS Operator Card.

Where appropriate, in-house Plant Loader Securer training and certification can provide documented evidence that employees have received relevant workplace training and assessment. This can suit companies operating their own equipment within controlled working arrangements. An in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.

Acceptance depends on the requirements of the employer, client, site, principal contractor and insurer.

Read our In-House Training vs NPORS Accredited Training Guide before deciding which certification route is appropriate.

Had an amazing experience day with Nick, who was a great instructor and took me from zero experience to fairly confidently (but slowly!) moving soil around in various ways, all whilst keeping a strong focus on safety and the potential hazards of operating heavy machinery. Cathy was also great, and helped organise the day for me. All around positive experience delivered by a small family business and I would definitely do a training course here if I were to do one!
