Novice, Experienced and Refresher Routes
Novice Lift Supervisor Training
The novice route is intended for suitable candidates who are new to supervising lifting operations and require structured instruction before assessment.
The course normally runs for three days and can accommodate up to six candidates. Previous experience working within lifting operations is beneficial because the course concerns a safety-critical supervisory role.
Experienced or Refresher Training
The one-day experienced/refresher route is for up to three suitable candidates who already possess relevant knowledge or have previously completed appropriate training.
It is not a shortened novice course. Candidates must have an appropriate level of existing competence for this route.

What Will Candidates Learn?
The course covers the knowledge and practical responsibilities involved in supervising a lifting operation.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Lift Supervisor, Appointed Person, crane or plant operator, Slinger Signaller and other members of the lifting team.
Lift Plans and Documentation
Understanding the approved lift plan, method statement, risk assessment, equipment information and agreed sequence of work.
Lifting Equipment
Suitability of lifting equipment and accessories, identification, inspection information and the importance of current documentation.
Site Control
Exclusion zones, access control, ground conditions, overhead hazards, nearby structures and interactions with other site activities.
Communication
Pre-lift briefings, recognised communication methods and effective coordination between operators, signallers and supervisors.
Unsafe Changes
Recognising changes that affect the approved plan, stopping the operation and referring the issue to the appropriate person.
LOLER, PUWER and Safe Lifting Operations
Lift Supervisors need an appropriate understanding of the legal duties and recognised practices affecting lifting operations.

Theory and Practical Assessment
Candidates complete the applicable NPORS theory and practical assessments.
The theory element checks the candidate’s understanding of subjects such as Lift Supervisor responsibilities, lift plans, lifting-team roles, legislation, hazards, communication and emergency procedures.
The practical element assesses the candidate’s ability to prepare for, coordinate and supervise a lifting operation safely. This includes following the agreed plan, communicating with the lifting team, maintaining control and responding appropriately if unsafe conditions arise.
Successful candidates receive the applicable NPORS certification for the route completed, subject to current NPORS requirements.

NPORS Certification and Level 4 NVQ Progression
The certification route depends on the candidate, employer and applicable NPORS requirements. Check what is accepted by the employer, client or principal contractor before booking.
Training and assessment should not be confused with an NVQ. They serve different purposes.
Experienced supervisors who already carry out the role in the workplace may later complete the Level 4 Lift Supervisor NVQ through workplace assessment.
The NVQ assesses occupational competence while the candidate performs genuine supervisory duties. It is not a substitute for appropriate initial training where the candidate is new to the role.
