Counterbalance forklift training for Cheltenham businesses and operators
If you’re looking for forklift training in Cheltenham, the right course depends on more than whether somebody has driven a forklift before.
A new employee starting from scratch needs a very different training route from an operator who has been driving counterbalance forklifts competently for years. The size and type of forklift being used also matters.
Vally Plant Training provides NPORS Counterbalance Forklift Training for Cheltenham businesses and individuals, including novice courses, refresher training and Experienced Worker Tests.
For employers with suitable equipment and facilities, training can be brought directly to your workplace. This can be particularly useful when several employees need training and taking an entire team away from the business isn’t practical.
Candidates who need a training facility can attend the partner forklift training facility we use in nearby Gloucester.
Our complete national course information is available on the Counterbalance Forklift Training Course.

On-site forklift training for Cheltenham businesses
For many employers, the most useful place to train forklift operators is the workplace where the equipment is actually used.
If your Cheltenham business has a suitable counterbalance forklift, loads and safe practical area, we can discuss delivering training at your premises.
On-site forklift training can be particularly useful for:
- Warehouses
- Engineering businesses
- Manufacturing companies
- Builders’ merchants
- Distribution operations
- Industrial premises
- Construction-related businesses
- Machinery and equipment companies
- Logistics operations
- Businesses with several forklift operators
Rather than sending employees individually to different courses, suitable candidates can be organised into groups based on their existing experience and training needs.
There is another advantage: operators can train with equipment relevant to their normal job and working environment.
The workplace still needs to meet the necessary training requirements, including a safe practical area and suitable equipment. Our On-Site Plant Training Requirements explains what should be available before training begins.
Training several forklift operators in Cheltenham?
If you have several employees requiring forklift training, tell us about the whole workforce requirement rather than booking each person separately.
Your employees may not all need the same course.
For example, you could have two new starters requiring novice training, three established drivers suitable for assessment and another operator who hasn’t used a forklift for several years and needs refresher training.
A company requirement might include:
- New or inexperienced operators
- Experienced forklift drivers
- Previously trained employees requiring refresher training
- Operators moving onto larger-capacity forklifts
- Staff using different truck sizes
- New employees requiring formal training
- Operators requiring additional or conversion training
- Different departments requiring forklift competence
We can look at the experience of the candidates and help identify the appropriate route rather than automatically putting everybody through a full novice course.
Businesses requiring wider operator training can also view our full range of training courses and NPORS training.
Which forklift course do I need?
There are three main routes available: novice training, refresher training and the Experienced Worker Test.
Choosing the right one depends on what the operator already knows and can genuinely do.
Novice forklift training in Cheltenham
Novice training is designed for somebody with little or no previous counterbalance forklift experience.
The course can take up to five days, with a maximum of three candidates.
This provides time to develop the operator’s knowledge and practical ability properly, including controls, inspections, manoeuvring, load handling, stability, stacking and safe working practices.
It is suitable for employers training people from scratch and individuals who want to develop forklift operating skills.
Our NPORS Novice Training Guide provides more information about the novice route.
Experienced Worker Test in Cheltenham
Some forklift operators already have considerable practical experience and don’t need to be taught how to operate the machine.
For these candidates, the Experienced Worker Test (EWT) may be appropriate.
The counterbalance forklift EWT is a one-day test-only route, with a maximum of four candidates.
An experienced candidate should already be capable of carrying out the required checks, manoeuvring the forklift safely, handling loads correctly and understanding important subjects such as stability and rated capacity.
The assessment isn’t intended as a shortcut around training. If the operator still needs instruction to reach the required standard, training is the correct route.
Our Experienced Worker Test Guide explains this route in more detail.
Forklift refresher training in Cheltenham
Skills can deteriorate, particularly where somebody hasn’t operated a forklift regularly or poor habits have developed over time.
Refresher training can help previously trained operators update their knowledge and practical skills.
It may be appropriate following:
- A period away from forklift operation
- Changes in workplace equipment
- Unsafe operating practices
- Changes to working methods
- An accident or near miss
- An employer competence review
- A return to forklift duties
There isn’t one universal legal expiry period applying to every forklift training certificate.
The important issue is continuing operator competence.
Read our NPORS Refresher Training Guide for further information.
What does counterbalance forklift training cover?
The exact course depends on the candidate’s route, experience and equipment, but subjects can include:
- Operator responsibilities
- Relevant health and safety requirements
- Forklift components and controls
- Pre-use inspections
- Starting and stopping
- Steering and manoeuvring
- Travelling loaded and unloaded
- Forklift stability
- Rated capacity
- Load centres
- Capacity plates
- Assessing loads
- Fork positioning
- Lifting and lowering
- Stacking and de-stacking
- Loading and unloading
- Pedestrian awareness
- Working in restricted areas
- Ramps and gradients
- Parking and securing the forklift
- Refuelling or charging considerations
- Attachments where applicable
- Defect reporting
- Theory and practical assessment
A good forklift operator needs more than the ability to make the machine move.
They need to understand what happens when a load is lifted, how the truck’s stability changes and when an apparently routine operation is becoming unsafe.
Counterbalance forklift categories – which size do you operate?
Not every counterbalance forklift is the same size.
A small electric forklift working inside a warehouse is a very different machine from a heavy counterbalance truck moving substantial engineering components.
Training is available across three capacity ranges.
Counterbalance forklifts up to 5 tonnes
This category includes many of the machines commonly found in warehouses, factories, builders’ merchants, distribution operations and general materials-handling workplaces.
It is the category many people associate with everyday counterbalance forklift work.
Counterbalance forklifts from 5 to 15 tonnes
Larger forklifts are required where heavier materials and equipment need to be moved.
These trucks can be found in engineering, manufacturing, machinery handling, industrial operations and businesses dealing with loads beyond the capacity of smaller forklifts.
Counterbalance forklifts over 15 tonnes
Forklifts above 15 tonnes are specialist heavy-capacity machines used for substantial loads.
Their size, weight and capacity introduce operating considerations that are very different from those encountered on a small warehouse forklift.
If you’re uncertain which category your operator requires, provide the make, model and rated capacity when you contact us.
Moving operators onto a larger forklift
A common mistake is assuming that once somebody has been trained on a counterbalance forklift, they’re automatically competent to operate any counterbalance forklift regardless of size.
That shouldn’t be assumed.
A substantial change in forklift capacity, operating characteristics, controls or attachment may require additional or conversion training.
For employers, this is worth considering whenever new equipment is introduced.
If your Cheltenham business is replacing a smaller forklift with a significantly larger machine, tell us what the operators have previously been trained on and what they’re expected to use next.
Forklift stability and safe load handling
Counterbalance forklifts are designed with rear weight to counterbalance the load being carried at the front.
The name can sometimes create a false sense that the machine is inherently impossible to overturn.
It isn’t.
Stability can be affected by:
- Weight of the load
- Load centre
- Load position
- Mast height
- Speed
- Steering
- Braking
- Slopes and gradients
- Ground or floor condition
- Tyre condition
- Attachments
- Travelling with a raised load
Operators need to understand how these factors interact rather than relying on the weight of the forklift to keep them safe.
Rated capacity and load centres
The number on a forklift’s capacity plate needs to be understood in context.
A truck rated to lift a certain weight doesn’t necessarily have that capacity with every load, attachment or configuration.
Load position matters.
Moving the load centre further forward changes the forces acting on the forklift, while an attachment may also alter the truck’s effective capacity.
Training therefore covers rated capacity, load centres and capacity information as part of understanding whether a particular lift can be completed safely.
Daily forklift inspections
The person operating a forklift is often the first person in a position to notice that something isn’t right with it.
Pre-use checks can include:
- Tyres and wheels
- Forks
- Mast
- Lift chains
- Hydraulic systems
- Hoses
- Steering
- Brakes
- Controls
- Warning devices
- Seat and restraint system
- Lights where fitted
- Battery or fuel system
- Capacity plate
- Visible damage
Finding a defect doesn’t mean the operator should simply make a mental note and carry on.
Problems need to be reported through the employer’s defect procedure, and equipment that isn’t safe to operate needs to be dealt with appropriately.
Our Plant Defect Reporting Guide explains the reporting process in more detail.
Electric, diesel and LPG counterbalance forklifts
The type of counterbalance forklift found at a Cheltenham workplace will depend heavily on what the business does and where the machine operates.
Electric forklifts are widely used in warehouses, manufacturing environments and indoor materials handling.
Diesel forklifts are commonly found in outdoor yards and heavier industrial applications.
LPG forklifts provide another option and are used across a range of industrial and warehouse environments.
Although the core principles of counterbalance operation remain relevant, operators also need to be familiar with the particular machine they’re expected to use.
Forklift attachments and specialist handling
A forklift fitted with standard forks may not remain in that configuration throughout its working life.
Businesses can use equipment such as:
- Sideshifts
- Fork positioners
- Clamps
- Jibs
- Fork extensions
- Specialist handling attachments
An attachment can affect the forklift’s capacity and operating characteristics.
This is particularly important in engineering and industrial environments where forklifts may be used to handle machinery or irregular loads rather than standard pallets.
Existing forklift training shouldn’t automatically be assumed to cover every attachment.
Where different equipment is being introduced, additional or conversion training may be needed.
Forklift training for Cheltenham’s changing business environment
Cheltenham isn’t only a retail and tourism town. Businesses across the area also operate from industrial, engineering, construction, distribution and commercial premises where materials and equipment need to be moved safely.
The town is also seeing significant new development, including the Golden Valley project on its western side. Construction of the first phase began in 2026, bringing further commercial development and associated activity to this part of Cheltenham.
For employers, the important point is that forklift training should reflect the actual workplace.
An operator moving pallets inside a warehouse has a different daily environment from somebody handling heavy equipment in an engineering yard.
Training needs to produce an operator who understands the machine, not simply somebody who has collected a certificate.
Training at our nearby Gloucester partner facility
Not every individual or business has a suitable forklift and training area available.
Candidates from Cheltenham who require a training facility can attend the partner forklift facility Vally Plant Training uses in Gloucester.

- Candidates without access to a forklift
- Small businesses without suitable facilities
- Employers wanting staff trained away from the workplace
- Experienced operators requiring assessment
- Operators requiring a different capacity category
Our Tewkesbury centre is not currently set up for counterbalance forklift training, so Gloucester is the facility used for this particular course.

NPORS counterbalance forklift training
Vally Plant Training is an NPORS Approved Training Provider.
NPORS provides a recognised route for operator training and assessment across numerous plant and machinery categories, including counterbalance forklifts.
People often refer to a forklift licence, forklift ticket or forklift certificate, although there is no government-issued forklift driving licence in the UK.
What matters is appropriate operator training and competence for the equipment and work involved.
If you want to understand the different certification routes, read our Complete NPORS Guide and NPORS Cards Explained.
In-house forklift training
Some Cheltenham employers may only require employees to operate forklifts internally within their own workplace.
Depending on the company’s requirements, an in-house training and certification route may be considered.
In-house certification provides evidence of the training and assessment completed, but it is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Its suitability depends on requirements set by the employer, client, workplace, principal contractor or insurer.
Businesses should establish what certification they actually require before choosing the route.
Our In-House Training vs NPORS Training Guide explains the difference.

Eligible CITB-registered employers may be able to access funding towards qualifying forklift training, subject to current CITB funding and eligibility requirements.

PPE required for counterbalance forklift training
PPE Required for Counterbalance Forklift Training
Candidates should wear suitable PPE for the practical forklift training environment. This would normally include:
Candidates completing on-site forklift training must also comply with any additional PPE requirements specified by the customer workplace.
Counterbalance forklift training prices in Cheltenham
Forklift training prices depend on what is actually required rather than simply the Cheltenham postcode.
Factors include:
- Number of candidates
- Novice, refresher or experienced route
- Forklift capacity
- Make and model where relevant
- Number of training days
- On-site or Gloucester facility training
- Workplace location
- Attachments or specialist requirements
For businesses, group bookings can provide a practical and economical way to train several operators together.
If you’re requesting a company quotation, give us the number of employees and a realistic indication of their previous forklift experience. This helps us establish the likely training requirement before providing a quote.
