ON-SITE FORKLIFT TRAINING FOR BRISTOL BUSINESSES

Train Your Operators at Your Own Workplace

Need several employees trained without sending your workforce away? Vally Plant Training delivers Counterbalance Forklift Training in Bristol at suitable customer premises, allowing operators to train on equipment relevant to the work they actually carry out.

COMPANY TRAINING   •   GROUP BOOKINGS   •   NOVICE TRAINING   •   REFRESHER TRAINING   •   EXPERIENCED WORKER TESTS

On-site counterbalance forklift training for Bristol businesses

If your business operates counterbalance forklifts in Bristol, bringing the training to your workplace can be one of the most practical ways to train your workforce.

Instead of sending several employees away individually, Vally Plant Training can deliver training at your premises where you have a suitable forklift, loads, facilities and a safe area for practical training and assessment.

This works particularly well for companies that need to train:

  • Several warehouse employees
  • New starters joining an existing team
  • Experienced operators requiring formal assessment
  • Previously trained drivers needing refresher training
  • Operators moving onto a larger-capacity forklift
  • Different shifts or departments
  • Employees using specialist equipment or attachments

On-site delivery also allows training to be carried out using a forklift relevant to your actual operation.

For Bristol employers, that’s important. A counterbalance forklift moving palletised goods around a distribution warehouse can have very different day-to-day demands from a larger truck handling industrial materials in an engineering or recycling environment.

Forklift training for Bristol’s warehouses, distribution and industrial businesses

Bristol has a particularly strong case for workplace-based forklift training because of the scale and variety of businesses operating around the city.

Avonmouth is a major distribution and industrial area, with warehousing, manufacturing, energy and recycling businesses alongside the port and strategic road network. Bristol City Council describes Avonmouth as a national distribution hub, making the area particularly relevant to materials-handling and forklift operations.

We can discuss on-site counterbalance forklift training for businesses operating in:

  • Warehousing
  • Logistics and distribution
  • Manufacturing
  • Engineering
  • Builders’ merchants
  • Recycling and waste
  • Construction supply
  • Industrial premises
  • Transport depots
  • Machinery handling
  • Storage and fulfilment operations

The course should reflect the equipment and environment the operator works in, rather than treating every forklift workplace as identical.

Training several forklift operators at your Bristol workplace

If you have four, six or ten employees requiring forklift training, don’t assume they all need to be booked onto the same course.

Talk to us about the whole workforce requirement first.

For example, a distribution company may have two new employees requiring novice training, four established forklift drivers who may be ready for Experienced Worker Tests and another operator who needs refresher training after a period away from the machine.

We can look at the candidates’ existing experience and help identify the appropriate route.

This can make training considerably easier to organise and helps avoid putting experienced operators through unnecessary novice training.

If your business needs additional operator categories at the same time, view our full range of plant and operator training courses or our wider NPORS Training options.

Which counterbalance forklift course does my workforce need?

There are three main routes available.

Novice forklift training in Bristol

Employees with little or no previous counterbalance forklift experience will normally require novice training.

The course can take up to five days, with a maximum of three candidates.

Training develops practical ability progressively rather than expecting a new operator to immediately handle loads in a working environment.

Subjects include machine familiarisation, controls, pre-use inspections, manoeuvring, stability, load handling, stacking and safe operating procedures.

Employers taking on new warehouse or industrial employees can read our NPORS Novice Training Guide for more information.

Experienced Worker Test in Bristol

An employee who has already been operating counterbalance forklifts competently may not require a full novice course.

Suitable experienced operators can complete an Experienced Worker Test (EWT).

The counterbalance forklift EWT is a one-day test-only route, with a maximum of four candidates.

It isn’t a shortened training course. Candidates need to arrive capable of meeting the required standard without being taught how to operate the forklift during the assessment.

Our Experienced Worker Test Guide explains who this route is designed for.

Forklift refresher training in Bristol

Previously trained operators may require refresher training where skills or knowledge need updating.

Reasons can include:

  • A long period without operating
  • An accident or near miss
  • Unsafe working practices
  • Changes to workplace equipment
  • A change in operating environment
  • An employer competence review

There isn’t a single legal rule stating that every forklift certificate automatically expires after a fixed number of years. Employers need to monitor competence and arrange further training where appropriate.

Read our NPORS Refresher Training Guide for more information.

What does counterbalance forklift training cover?

Course content depends on the operator’s route and equipment but can include:

  • Operator responsibilities
  • Pre-use inspections
  • Controls and instruments
  • Safe starting and stopping
  • Steering and manoeuvring
  • Travelling loaded and unloaded
  • Forklift stability
  • Rated capacity
  • Load centres
  • Capacity plates
  • Load assessment
  • Fork positioning
  • Lifting and lowering
  • Stacking and de-stacking
  • Loading and unloading
  • Working around pedestrians
  • Ramps and gradients
  • Parking and securing the forklift
  • Defect reporting
  • Attachments where relevant
  • Theory and practical assessment

For company training, the aim is practical competence that operators can apply when they return to normal work.

Counterbalance forklift categories for Bristol employers

Businesses don’t all operate the same size of forklift.

Training is available across three capacity ranges:

Up to 5 tonnes

Common across warehouses, logistics operations, factories, builders’ merchants and general materials handling.

5–15 tonnes

Used for heavier materials and equipment in manufacturing, engineering and industrial workplaces.

Over 15 tonnes

Specialist heavy-capacity machines used where substantial industrial loads, equipment or materials need to be handled.

If your company is changing forklifts or introducing a larger machine, don’t automatically assume existing training covers it.

Tell us the make, model and rated capacity of the forklift your employees will use.

Training operators on your own forklift

One of the strongest advantages of on-site training is that candidates can train with equipment relevant to their normal job.

This is especially useful where your operation involves:

  • A particular forklift capacity
  • Restricted warehouse layouts
  • Specific types of loads
  • Yard operations
  • Loading and unloading vehicles
  • Racking systems
  • Industrial materials
  • Attachments

Different forklifts can have different controls, capacities and operating characteristics.

Where attachments are involved, additional or conversion training may also be necessary.

Forklift inspections and defect reporting

Training doesn’t begin when the operator starts driving.

The condition of the forklift needs to be considered before work starts.

Operators should understand how to check relevant items such as tyres, forks, mast components, lift chains, hydraulic systems, steering, brakes, warning devices and restraint systems.

If something is wrong, the operator also needs to know what happens next.

A defect shouldn’t simply be ignored because production is busy.

Our Plant Defect Reporting Guide explains safety-critical defects, reporting procedures and taking unsafe equipment out of service.

Where do we provide forklift training around Bristol?

Our main aim for Bristol is on-site company training, and we can discuss workplace delivery throughout Bristol and the surrounding industrial and commercial areas.

This can include suitable customer premises around:

Bristol • Avonmouth • Severnside • Portbury • Filton • Patchway • Cribbs Causeway • Brislington • Keynsham and surrounding areas.

Company bookings further across the South West can also be considered.

What does a Bristol workplace need for on-site training?

For workplace training, the customer needs to provide suitable equipment and facilities.

Depending on the course, this can include:

  • Suitable counterbalance forklift
  • Safe practical training area
  • Suitable loads and pallets
  • Stacking area or racking where appropriate
  • Manufacturer’s operator manual
  • Relevant machine documentation
  • Risk assessment
  • Candidate PPE
  • Photo identification
  • Welfare facilities
  • Safe separation from unrelated workplace operations

The forklift must be safe and available for the training.

Our On-Site Plant Training Requirements gives employers a fuller preparation checklist.

What if we don’t have a suitable forklift or training area?

Not every business has an environment where training can be carried out safely.

Individuals are even less likely to have access to suitable equipment.

Where on-site delivery isn’t possible, candidates can enquire about training at the partner counterbalance forklift facility we use in Gloucester.

This gives Bristol individuals and smaller businesses an alternative when they cannot provide the equipment and practical area themselves.

NPORS forklift training and certification

Vally Plant Training is an NPORS Approved Training Provider.

People regularly search for a forklift licence in Bristol, but there isn’t a government-issued forklift driving licence in the UK. What matters is appropriate operator training and competence for the equipment being used.

NPORS provides a recognised route for operator training and assessment.

Employers and operators wanting to understand the different routes can read our Complete NPORS Guide and NPORS Cards Explained.

In-house forklift training for Bristol companies

Some businesses only require operators to use forklifts internally within their own organisation.

Where appropriate, an in-house training and certification option can be considered.

An in-house certificate can provide evidence of training and assessment, but it is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.

Whether it is suitable depends on the requirements of the employer, workplace, client, principal contractor and insurer.

Read our In-House Training vs NPORS Training Guide before deciding which route best suits your workforce.

CITB funding for forklift training

Vally Plant Training is a CITB Training Provider Network Member.

Eligible CITB-registered employers may be able to access funding towards qualifying training, subject to current CITB requirements.

If you’re arranging training for several Bristol employees, mention your CITB registration when requesting your quotation.

PPE Required for Counterbalance Forklift Training

Candidates should wear suitable PPE for the practical forklift training environment. This would normally include:

✓ Safety Boots
✓ Hi-Vis Clothing
✓ Suitable Workwear
✓ Hard Hat Where Required
✓ Gloves Where Required
✓ Site-Specific PPE Where Required

Candidates completing on-site training must also comply with any additional PPE requirements specified by their workplace.

How much does forklift training in Bristol cost?

We quote Bristol company training according to the actual requirement rather than applying one price to every workplace.

The cost can depend on:

  • Number of operators
  • Novice, refresher or EWT route
  • Number of training days
  • Forklift capacity
  • Site location
  • Equipment available
  • Attachments or specialist requirements
  • Whether training is on-site or at the Gloucester facility

For businesses, training several suitable operators together can be more cost-effective than making separate individual bookings. Our own on-site guidance also identifies workplace training as an effective option for businesses training multiple operators.

When requesting a quotation, tell us how many people need training, what experience they have and what forklifts they operate.
