Counterbalance forklift training for Birmingham businesses
Birmingham and the wider West Midlands have a large concentration of warehouses, distribution operations, manufacturing plants, engineering businesses, builders’ merchants and industrial workplaces where counterbalance forklifts are used every day.
In these environments, the ability to move a forklift is only one part of being a competent operator.
Drivers also need to understand stability, rated capacity, load centres, pedestrian risks, stacking, daily inspections and safe manoeuvring.
Vally Plant Training provides counterbalance forklift training in Birmingham primarily for businesses wanting to train their employees at their own workplace.
Training on the employer’s premises can be particularly useful because candidates work with equipment and conditions relevant to their normal duties.

On-site forklift training in Birmingham
For companies with suitable equipment, bringing the training to the workplace can be a practical way of developing several operators without sending the workforce to another training location.
It also enables training to take account of the type of forklift the operator normally uses.
On-site counterbalance forklift training can suit:
- Warehousing operations
- Distribution centres
- Logistics companies
- Manufacturing plants
- Engineering businesses
- Builders’ merchants
- Industrial estates and yards
- Construction supply businesses
- Machinery and equipment companies
- Businesses introducing new forklift operators
A suitable counterbalance forklift and safe area for the practical exercises must be available throughout the course.
The training area should provide enough space for the required manoeuvring and load-handling exercises without unnecessary interference from normal site operations.
Before arranging training, check our On-Site Plant Training Requirements.
Need forklift training for several employees?
A group of forklift operators can contain very different levels of ability.
For example, a Birmingham warehouse could have a new employee who has never operated a forklift, an experienced driver needing formal assessment and an existing operator whose previous training now needs refreshing.
These candidates shouldn’t automatically be placed on the same training route.
Tell us about each operator’s previous experience and we can help establish whether they may require:
- Full novice training
- Experienced Worker Testing
- Refresher training
- Additional training
- A different forklift capacity category
- Training following a change of equipment
For employers arranging several courses, this also provides an opportunity to look at the wider competence requirements of the workforce rather than booking individual courses in isolation.
Browse our full range of training courses if your business also operates other types of plant or work equipment.
Which counterbalance forklift course do I need?
Novice forklift training in Birmingham
Novice counterbalance forklift training is for candidates with little or no previous experience.
The course can take up to five days, with a maximum of three candidates.
Training develops the operator from basic machine familiarisation through to controlled manoeuvring and practical load handling.
Candidates learn how to complete appropriate pre-use checks, operate the truck safely, recognise hazards and understand how factors such as load weight and load centre affect stability.
The aim isn’t simply to teach somebody which levers to operate.
A new forklift driver needs to understand what the machine is doing and recognise when an intended operation could become unsafe.
Read our NPORS Novice Training Guide for further information about this route.
Experienced Worker Test in Birmingham
A competent operator with sufficient counterbalance forklift experience may be suitable for a one-day Experienced Worker Test, with a maximum of four candidates.
The EWT is a test-only route.
It is intended for operators who already have the necessary practical ability and underpinning knowledge.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate inspections, manoeuvring, safe load handling, stacking and relevant operating knowledge without needing instruction during the assessment.
Simply having driven a forklift at work does not automatically mean an operator is ready for an Experienced Worker Test.
Our Experienced Worker Test Guide explains what operators should consider before choosing this route.
Forklift refresher training in Birmingham
Refresher training can be useful where an operator has previously received forklift training but their practical skills or knowledge need updating.
Reasons an employer may consider refresher training include:
- A significant period without operating
- An accident or near miss
- Unsafe operating practices
- Changes to workplace equipment
- Changes to the operator’s duties
- An employer competence review
There isn’t one universal legal expiry date that automatically applies to every forklift training certificate.
Employers should monitor competence and provide additional or refresher training where necessary.
Read our NPORS Refresher Training Guide for more information.
What will I learn on the forklift course?
Course content depends on the operator’s training route, experience and the forklift being used.
Subjects can include:
- Operator responsibilities
- Forklift components
- Controls and instruments
- Pre-use inspections
- Starting and stopping safely
- Steering and manoeuvring
- Travelling loaded and unloaded
- Forklift stability
- Rated capacity
- Capacity plates
- Load centres
- Assessing loads
- Lifting and lowering
- Stacking and de-stacking
- Vehicle loading and unloading
- Pedestrian awareness
- Restricted visibility
- Ramps and gradients
- Safe parking procedures
- Defect identification
- Defect reporting
- Attachments where applicable
- Theory assessment
- Practical assessment
The objective is to develop an operator who can safely apply what they have learned when faced with changing workplace conditions.
Forklift categories – up to 5t, 5–15t and over 15t
Counterbalance forklift trucks range from relatively small warehouse machines to specialist heavy industrial equipment.
Training is available across three capacity ranges:
Up to 5 tonnes – typically associated with warehouses, distribution centres, factories, builders’ merchants and general palletised materials.
5–15 tonnes – heavier counterbalance trucks used within manufacturing, engineering, machinery handling and industrial environments.
Over 15 tonnes – specialist high-capacity forklifts used to handle substantial machinery, components and other heavy industrial loads.
The skills needed to operate a smaller warehouse truck shouldn’t automatically be assumed to cover a substantially larger machine.
Before booking workplace training, provide the forklift make, model and rated capacity so the correct category can be considered.
Forklift safety and stability
Counterbalance forklift stability is affected by far more than the weight printed on the side of the machine.
Operators need to consider the relationship between the forklift, the load and the conditions in which it is being handled.
Factors affecting stability can include:
- Load weight
- Load centre
- Load dimensions
- Height of the load
- Turning
- Braking
- Speed
- Gradients
- Uneven surfaces
- Attachments
- Raised loads
- Incorrect fork positioning
An operator who doesn’t understand these factors can place both the machine and surrounding personnel at risk.
This is particularly important in Birmingham warehouses and industrial workplaces where forklifts may operate close to pedestrians, storage racking, delivery vehicles and other moving equipment.
HSE guidance and employer responsibilities
Employers using rider-operated lift trucks should consider the relevant Health and Safety Executive guidance covering operator training and safe use.
Forklift training isn’t simply a matter of obtaining a certificate.
Employers also need to consider whether an operator is competent for the machine, workplace and tasks they are expected to undertake.
Work equipment used by employees also falls within the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
This makes appropriate information, instruction and training an important part of managing workplace equipment safely.
Daily forklift inspections and defect reporting
Daily or pre-use inspections help identify problems before a forklift is placed into normal operation.
Depending on the machine, checks can cover:
- Forks
- Mast
- Lift chains
- Carriage
- Hydraulic systems
- Tyres
- Wheels
- Steering
- Brakes
- Warning devices
- Operator restraint
- Visible leaks
- General damage
Finding a defect isn’t the end of the inspection process.
The operator also needs to know who to report it to and whether the forklift can safely remain in service.
Safety-critical defects should not simply be ignored because the machine is required for production.
Read our Plant Defect Reporting Guide for more information about identifying, reporting and managing machinery defects.
Forklift training for Birmingham warehouses and industry
One advantage of workplace delivery is that the training requirement can reflect the type of operation the employee actually performs.
A forklift driver working within a large distribution warehouse may regularly deal with racking, palletised loads, loading bays and high levels of pedestrian activity.
An engineering company may operate a much larger-capacity counterbalance truck to move machinery or irregular components around an industrial yard.
A builders’ merchant can present a different combination of outdoor storage, delivery vehicles, customers and material-handling requirements.
For Birmingham company bookings, tell us about:
- Forklift make and model
- Rated capacity
- Attachments
- Type of loads normally handled
- Workplace environment
- Number of candidates
- Each candidate’s experience
This helps establish the most suitable training route before the course is arranged.
Where is forklift training delivered in Birmingham?
Counterbalance forklift training in Birmingham is primarily delivered at suitable customer premises.
This makes the page particularly relevant to employers looking for:
Forklift training at work • Company forklift training • Warehouse forklift training • Group forklift courses • Experienced forklift testing • Workplace refresher training
The employer needs to provide a suitable counterbalance forklift and appropriate training environment.
For businesses with several candidates, workplace delivery can also make it easier to organise training around staffing and production requirements.
Areas covered around Birmingham
On-site counterbalance forklift training can be arranged at suitable workplaces throughout Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, including:
Aston • Erdington • Tyseley • Digbeth • Saltley • Perry Barr • Smethwick • Oldbury • West Bromwich • Solihull and surrounding areas.

NPORS forklift training and certification
Vally Plant Training is an NPORS Approved Training Provider.
Searches for operator training often use phrases such as forklift licence Birmingham, forklift ticket Birmingham or forklift certificate Birmingham.
There isn’t a government-issued forklift driving licence in the same way that somebody holds a driving licence for a car.
The important issue is appropriate training and demonstrated competence for the equipment the employee is expected to operate.
Depending on the chosen route and requirements, NPORS training and assessment can provide recognised evidence of operator competence.
For further information, read our Complete NPORS Guide and NPORS Cards Explained.
In-house forklift training and certification in Birmingham
For some Birmingham employers, an NPORS Operator Card may not be necessary for the work their employees perform.
Where operators only use forklifts internally for the same organisation, an in-house forklift training and certification route may be suitable.
In-house training can provide documented evidence of the instruction and assessment completed by the operator.
However, an in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Employers should consider where the operator will work and whether the proposed certification will be accepted by relevant clients, principal contractors, workplaces and insurers.
This makes choosing the correct certification route important before training is booked.
Read our In-House Training vs NPORS Training Guide to compare the two options.
CITB funding for forklift training
Vally Plant Training is a CITB Training Provider Network Member.
Eligible CITB-registered employers may be able to obtain funding towards qualifying training, subject to current CITB eligibility and funding requirements.
For Birmingham businesses arranging training for several employees, tell us if your company is CITB registered when requesting a quotation.
PPE Required for Counterbalance Forklift Training
Candidates should wear suitable PPE for their practical forklift training environment. This would normally include:
Candidates undertaking training at a Birmingham customer workplace must also follow any additional PPE requirements imposed by that site.
Counterbalance forklift training prices in Birmingham
There isn’t one fixed price that accurately represents every Birmingham workplace booking.
The quotation can depend on:
- Novice, refresher or experienced route
- Number of operators
- Forklift capacity
- Training duration
- Customer location
- Equipment being used
- Attachments where applicable
- Candidate experience
- Number of training days required
For the most accurate quotation, tell us how many employees require training, what experience they have and which forklift they operate.
Where several suitable candidates can train together, a company or group booking can often provide a more practical way of organising workforce training.

Had an amazing experience day with Nick, who was a great instructor and took me from zero experience to fairly confidently (but slowly!) moving soil around in various ways, all whilst keeping a strong focus on safety and the potential hazards of operating heavy machinery. Cathy was also great, and helped organise the day for me. All around positive experience delivered by a small family business and I would definitely do a training course here if I were to do one!Posted on Google![]()
