New to Excavators?
Our 5-day novice 360 excavator course is for candidates with little or no previous operating experience.
Novice training is delivered one-to-one, giving the candidate dedicated practical machine time to learn controls, manoeuvring, digging, trenching, backfilling, grading and loading safely before assessment.

Experienced operators who already use excavators competently may be suitable for the 1-day Experienced Worker Test, with a maximum of four candidates.
This is a test route rather than basic operator training. Candidates should already be able to complete the required checks and practical tasks independently.

Which Excavator Category Do I Need?
Choosing the correct excavator category is important. A machine operator should not assume one excavator ticket automatically covers every machine.
Micro Excavator
For compact excavators up to 1 tonne, commonly encountered in landscaping, utilities, restricted-access work and smaller groundworks.
360 Excavator Below 10 Tonnes
Commonly used across drainage, utilities, housebuilding, landscaping and general groundworks.
360 Excavator Above & Below 10 Tonnes
Suitable where the operator needs the broader category appropriate to larger excavators commonly used for construction, civil engineering, earthmoving and infrastructure work.
Tracked and wheeled configurations should also be considered when selecting the correct training.

Excavator Safety, Stability and Ground Conditions
Excavator operators need to think beyond the controls in the cab.
Ground conditions, machine orientation, slopes, excavation edges, attachments and working radius can all affect stability. An area that appears firm may also contain recently backfilled ground, buried structures or weakened ground close to an excavation.

Excavators and Underground Services
Excavator operators working on drainage, utility installations, roadworks and groundworks may be operating close to buried electricity cables, gas pipes, water mains and telecommunications.
Mechanical excavation should form part of a properly planned safe system of work. Operators need to understand the site controls in place before digging begins.
Where employees are responsible for locating underground services, separate CAT & Genny Training may also be required.
Excavator Attachments
Excavators can operate with far more than a standard digging bucket.
Depending on the work, operators may encounter breakers, grabs, augers, compaction plates, tilt buckets, tiltrotators and other specialist attachments.

Using an excavator to lift suspended loads introduces additional risks and responsibilities.
Operators handling pipes, manhole rings, trench boxes or other suspended loads may require additional knowledge covering machine lifting capacity, rated lifting points, load charts, lifting accessories, LOLER, lift planning and load control.

An operator card does not remove the employer’s responsibility to ensure the person remains competent for the machine and work they are undertaking.

NPORS Excavator Training
NPORS certification is generally appropriate for operators who need recognised plant certification for work across different construction sites, contractors, clients or employers.
In-House Excavator Training
Some businesses only need employees trained and assessed to operate company machinery within their own working environment.
Where suitable, we can provide in-house excavator operator training and certification.
In-house certification is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card, and acceptance should be confirmed with the employer, client, principal contractor, site and insurer.

Assessment and Certification
NPORS candidates complete the appropriate theory and practical assessment for their course and excavator category.
Assessment can include machine knowledge, pre-use inspection, hazard awareness, controls, manoeuvring, excavation tasks, loading, parking and shutdown.
Successful candidates receive certification through the appropriate NPORS registration route.
Excavator Ticket, Digger Ticket or Digger Licence?

You may be looking for an excavator ticket, digger ticket, 360 ticket, digger licence, excavator licence or operator card.
There isn’t one government-issued construction digger licence equivalent to a normal driving licence.
What matters is that the operator has received suitable training and can demonstrate competence for the machine and work they are expected to undertake. Employers, sites and contractors may also specify a recognised certification scheme such as NPORS.
