Novice Dumper Training
New to Forward Tipping Dumpers?
Our 3-day novice dumper course is designed for candidates with little or no previous practical operating experience.
Rather than simply preparing somebody for a test, the course progressively develops knowledge and practical skills including machine checks, controls, travelling, loading, tipping, stability and working safely around other people and plant.
A maximum of three novice candidates can attend.

Experienced Dumper Operator Test
Already operate Forward Tipping Dumpers competently?
The Experienced Worker Test (EWT) is the test-only route for operators who already possess the necessary practical ability and underpinning knowledge.
Allow approximately 2–3 hours per candidate, with up to six suitable experienced operators assessed in a day.
The EWT is not a shortened novice course. Operators should already be able to use the machine safely and independently before presenting themselves for assessment.

Dumper Refresher Training
Yes, Forward Tipping Dumper refresher training is available.
It is designed for previously trained operators who need to update their practical ability and safety knowledge.
This may be appropriate following a period away from operating, where an employer identifies a training need or where existing operator skills need refreshing.

Forward Tipping Dumpers are extensively used on groundworks and construction projects to move materials such as excavated spoil, aggregates, hardcore, stone and soil. The machine may look relatively straightforward to operate, but safe use requires an understanding of far more than the controls.
Operators need to consider ground conditions, load capacity, gradients, visibility, stability, haul routes, loading positions, tipping areas, excavation edges and interaction with other plant and pedestrians. Forward Tipping Dumper Stability
A loaded Forward Tipping Dumper can behave very differently from an empty machine.
The operator needs to understand how speed, steering, gradients, crossfalls, uneven ground, load distribution and tipping operations can affect stability.
Ground conditions also change. A haul route that was suitable at the start of a project may deteriorate following heavy rain, excavation work or repeated plant movements. Operators should therefore continually assess their route rather than assuming it remains safe simply because it was used earlier.
Stability is particularly important when approaching tipping areas and excavation edges. Operators need to consider the condition and load-bearing ability of the ground as well as the position of the machine.
Loading and Tipping Safely
Forward Tipping Dumpers commonly work alongside excavators on Bristol groundworks, drainage and construction projects. The dumper operator needs to position the machine correctly for loading while remaining aware of the excavator’s working radius.
Once loaded, consideration should be given to:

NPORS or In-House Dumper Training?

NPORS is suitable where recognised NPORS registration or an Operator Card is required. In-house certification can suit employers whose operators use company machinery within their own working environment where that certification is accepted. An in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Acceptance can depend on the employer, client, principal contractor, site or insurer, so establish what is required before selecting the route.

PUWER and Employer Responsibilities
A dumper ticket or training certificate is only one part of managing plant safely. Employers need to ensure that work equipment is suitable and employees receive appropriate information, instruction and training.
For Forward Tipping Dumper operations this can include considering machine suitability, maintenance, inspections, operator competence, ground conditions, haul routes, tipping arrangements, traffic management and pedestrian segregation.
Operators may also require familiarisation when moving to a different dumper make or model.

Yes. Experienced Forward Tipping Dumper operators working in the industry can progress from an NPORS Red Trained Operator Card towards a Blue Competent Operator Card by completing the relevant Plant Operations NVQ and satisfying the applicable card-scheme requirements.
