Novice candidates start with the legal and regulatory foundation — LOLER, roles and responsibilities, why lift planning exists as a discipline — before moving into applied lift-planning exercises using realistic scenarios rather than abstract theory.

By the later days, candidates are producing full lift plans and having them critiqued, which is where most of the real learning happens. It’s easy to recite the theory and much harder to spot the flaw in a lift plan that looks fine at first glance.

The experienced worker route moves faster, since candidates already have practical exposure to the role. It’s a focused refresher on current legislation and best practice, followed by a practical assessment to confirm the candidate is planning lifts to the standard the certification requires, not just the standard they picked up informally on-site over time.

No. They’re different roles with different NPORS courses. The Appointed Person plans and takes responsibility for the lift, while the slinger/signaller attaches loads and directs the operator during the lift.
