What Is an NPORS 360 Excavator Experienced Worker Test?
The NPORS Experienced Worker Test, commonly shortened to EWT, is an assessment route for people who already operate 360 excavators competently.
Instead of completing several days of novice instruction, the candidate undertakes the required theory and practical assessments for the relevant excavator category.
The assessor must see that the operator can work safely, efficiently and independently. The candidate should be able to explain the reasons behind safe operating procedures as well as demonstrate practical machine control.
The test is appropriate for genuine working operators who need an NPORS Operator Card, an additional excavator category or recognised evidence of their existing competence.
How Much Experience Do I Need?
There is no substitute for genuine, recent operating experience.
Vally Plant Training recommends that candidates have at least one – Two years of relevant 360 excavator operating experience before attempting the Experienced Worker Test. However, suitability should be based on actual competence rather than time alone.
Someone operating an excavator daily may build experience differently from somebody who has used a machine occasionally over several years.
Before booking, you should be able to:
- Carry out pre-use and safety inspections
- Identify the major machine components
- Explain the function of the controls and safety devices
- Mount and dismount correctly
- Travel and position the machine safely
- Assess ground conditions and nearby hazards
- Maintain appropriate clearance from excavations and edges
- Excavate to line, depth and level
- Load materials safely
- Backfill, grade and reinstate the work area
- Change or secure attachments where included
- Park and shut down correctly
- Identify and report defects
- Answer theory questions without assistance
If you cannot perform these tasks safely without instruction, contact us about appropriate NPORS 360 Excavator Training before attempting the test.
What Happens During the NPORS Excavator Test?
The Experienced Worker Test normally consists of a theory assessment followed by a practical machine assessment.
Theory Assessment
The theory assessment checks whether you understand:
- Operator responsibilities
- Relevant health and safety requirements
- Manufacturer information
- Pre-use inspections
- Machine stability
- Ground and site conditions
- Excavation hazards
- Underground and overhead services
- Safe travelling and positioning
- Attachments and machine limitations
- Defect reporting
- Safe shutdown procedures
You must answer the questions using your existing knowledge. The EWT does not include the structured theory instruction provided during a novice course.
Practical Assessment
During the practical assessment, you will be required to demonstrate safe and controlled excavator operation.
The exact tasks depend on the excavator category and assessment requirements, but candidates should expect to demonstrate machine preparation, travelling, positioning, excavation, material handling, backfilling, levelling and shutdown procedures.
Machine Preparation
Pre-use checks, component identification, access, controls, safety devices and defect reporting.
Travel & Positioning
Safe travel, observation, steering, positioning, stability and maintaining suitable clearance from hazards.
Excavating & Trenching
Controlled excavation, trench formation, spoil placement and working accurately to the required line, depth and level.
Loading & Material Handling
Loading a suitable vehicle or container while maintaining control, observation and safe working clearances.
Backfilling & Levelling
Backfilling excavations, grading material, levelling the work area and leaving the site in an appropriate condition.
Parking & Shutdown
Selecting a safe parking position, lowering equipment, isolating the machine and completing end-of-use checks.
Which NPORS N202 Excavator Category Do I Need?
Selecting the correct category is important because your assessment and NPORS registration need to reflect the type and size of excavator you operate.
360 Excavator Below 10 Tonnes
The Below 10 Tonnes category covers suitable 360 excavators with an operating weight below 10 tonnes, excluding the separate Micro Excavator category.
This category is commonly used across groundworks, drainage, landscaping, utilities and smaller construction projects.
360 Excavator Above 10 Tonnes
The Above 10 Tonnes category is intended for operators working with larger excavators commonly used for earthmoving, major construction, civil engineering, demolition and infrastructure projects.
If you operate machines above 10 tonnes, make sure you are assessed for the appropriate category required by your employer, site or contractor.
Micro Excavator
Micro excavators up to 1 tonne have their own category. If this is the machine you need to operate, view our dedicated Micro Excavator Training Course rather than booking the N202 test without checking the required category.
Our main 360 Excavator Training page explains the available categories, novice courses, refresher training and current excavator course prices.

On-Site NPORS Excavator Tests Nationwide
Businesses can arrange Experienced Worker Tests at their own workplace anywhere in the UK, subject to suitable equipment and site facilities.
On-site testing can be cost-effective where several competent excavator operators require assessment. It also allows candidates to demonstrate their ability using machinery relevant to their normal work.

NPORS Certification After the Test
Successful candidates can receive the applicable NPORS registration and Operator Card, subject to meeting the requirements of the selected card route.
The appropriate option may depend on whether you need:
- An NPORS Traditional Operator Card
- An NPORS CSCS Red Trained Operator Card
- Progression towards an NPORS CSCS Blue Competent Operator Card
Card acceptance and requirements can differ between employers, clients and construction sites. Confirm what you need before booking if a particular card route has been specified.
Our NPORS Cards Explained Guide provides further information about operator-card options.
Upgrade from a Red Card to a Blue Competent Operator Card
Passing the appropriate NPORS assessment can form part of your operator-card progression, but the Experienced Worker Test alone does not replace the vocational qualification required for a Blue Competent Operator Card.
Operators following the NPORS CSCS route will normally need to complete the relevant Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ while demonstrating competence in the workplace.
Vally Plant Training can assess experienced excavator operators at work while they carry out their normal duties. Evidence can include workplace observation, professional discussion, questioning and relevant supporting documents.
Read our Red-to-Blue Operator Card Guide or ask us about workplace-based excavator NVQ assessment.
NPORS Test or In-House Excavator Assessment?
The NPORS Experienced Worker Test is usually the stronger option where an operator needs recognised registration for work across different employers, clients, contractors or construction sites.
An in-house assessment may suit a business whose employee will only operate company machinery within a defined working environment, provided that certification is acceptable to the employer, client, site and insurer.
An in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Before choosing, read our In-House Training vs NPORS Accredited Training Guide.

The correct category depends on the excavators you operate or expect to use at work. Below 10 Tonnes covers suitable excavators below 10 tonnes, excluding Micro Excavators. Operators working with larger machines will normally require the appropriate Above 10 Tonnes category. Our main 360 Excavator Training page explains the categories in more detail.
If you are not yet able to demonstrate the required standard, further training will be recommended before another assessment. Contacting us honestly about your experience before booking helps us identify whether an Experienced Worker Test, refresher course or novice course is most appropriate.
