Why Swindon Companies Book Excavation Marshal Training
Excavation work isn’t just about the person sitting in the excavator. There can be groundworkers in and around the area, buried services below the surface, other plant moving nearby and a job that changes as soon as digging starts.
The person carrying out the Excavation Marshal role needs to understand what’s supposed to happen and recognise when what they’re actually seeing doesn’t match the plan.
That’s particularly relevant for teams involved in:
- Groundworks and site preparation
- Drainage installations
- Utility connections
- Cable and duct installation
- Water and sewer works
- Housing developments
- Commercial construction
- Civil engineering
- Road and infrastructure projects
- Foundation and trench excavation
You don’t have to be an excavator operator to become an Excavation Marshal. The two roles require different competencies. If an employee is also expected to operate the machine, see our 360 Excavator Training Course.
Which Excavation Marshal Course Do Your Employees Need?
Getting the route right matters.
There’s little point putting a new employee through an experienced test simply because it’s a test-only option. Equally, somebody who has been doing the role competently for years may not need to sit through training intended for a beginner.
New to the Excavation Marshal Role
Book the novice course.
This is a 1-day training and assessment route for a maximum of 3 candidates.
It’s designed for people who need to be taught the role before they’re assessed, including employees who may already work in groundworks but haven’t previously been responsible for acting as an Excavation Marshal.
Our NPORS Novice Training Guide explains what to expect from novice training.
Already Experienced and Just Need Testing?
The Experienced Worker Test is for workers who already have the knowledge and experience required to meet the assessment standard.
It takes 1 day with up to 6 experienced candidates.
There is no training included.
If the employee needs us to show them how to carry out the role, they’re not ready for the experienced route.
Read our NPORS Experienced Worker Test Guide if you’re unsure whether your employees are ready.
Previously Trained but Need a Refresher?
For employees who have completed Excavation Marshal training before but need to refresh their knowledge, we use the training route rather than putting them directly through an Experienced Worker Test.
That gives them the opportunity to go back through the important parts of the role before being assessed.
What Does an Excavation Marshal Need to Know?
A good Excavation Marshal needs more than a hi-vis vest and a set of hand signals.
They need enough understanding of the planned excavation to recognise when something has changed or when the work is moving into an area of uncertainty.
The course can cover:
- The role of the Excavation Marshal – Banks person
- Responsibilities before excavation starts
- Understanding the planned work
- Excavation hazards and controls
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Permit-to-dig arrangements
- Underground service information
- Limitations of utility plans
- Safe digging principles
- CAT & Genny awareness
- Communication with excavator operators
- Communication with groundworkers
- Safe positioning
- Exclusion and working areas
- Monitoring excavation progress
- Changes in ground conditions
- Emergency arrangements
- When work should be stopped
- Theory and practical assessment
NPORS identifies the category as N027 Excavation Marshal – Banks person, with a one-day novice course and a maximum novice ratio of three candidates.
Before the Bucket Goes in the Ground
A lot of excavation safety is decided before anybody starts digging.
Where are the known services?
What information is available?
Does the site match the drawings?
Has the excavation area been properly identified?
Who is controlling the work?
How will the operator and people on the ground communicate?
What happens if something unexpected is found?
These aren’t questions you want people trying to answer after the excavator has already uncovered something nobody expected.
Our Working Near Underground Services Guide goes further into the practical issues surrounding buried services and safe digging.
Excavation Marshal Training and Underground Services
Buried services are one of the main reasons excavation work needs proper planning and control. Electricity, gas, water, telecommunications, drainage and other services can all be present below the surface.
Plans are useful, but they’re not something an excavation team should follow blindly. The information needs to be considered alongside appropriate locating methods, site conditions and safe digging procedures. If what appears on site doesn’t match what was expected, that’s the point to stop and find out why.
Do We Need CAT & Genny Training as Well?
Possibly – but it’s a different course.
An Excavation Marshal needs an awareness of underground-service risks, but that doesn’t automatically mean they’re trained and competent to use cable avoidance equipment.
If your employee is responsible for using a CAT and Genny to help locate buried services, they should have appropriate training for that equipment.
Vally Plant Training provides separate CAT & Genny Training for employees carrying out service-location work. For groundworks and utilities companies, it’s quite common for both competencies to be relevant to the same team.
What If the Excavation Changes Halfway Through the Job?
That’s exactly why the role isn’t just about watching an excavator. The conditions at the start of an excavation may not be the conditions you have an hour later.
Unexpected services can appear. Ground conditions can change. The excavation can become deeper or wider. People or machinery may enter the working area. The work may start moving beyond the area originally planned. An Excavation Marshal needs to stay aware of these changes.
Where the agreed safe system can no longer be followed, or something is found that hasn’t been properly identified, the answer isn’t to keep digging and hope for the best. The work needs to be stopped and checked.
Excavation Marshal or Plant Banksman – Which One Do We Need?
It depends on the job you’re asking the employee to do.
An Excavation Marshal is concerned with the excavation operation, including ground disturbance, underground services, safe digging arrangements and hazards developing around the excavation.
A Plant Banksman or Plant Marshal is primarily concerned with the safe movement and interaction of construction plant.
Some sites need both.
If your employee will be controlling or guiding excavators, dumpers, telehandlers or other plant movements, take a look at our Plant Banksman Training Course.

In-House Excavation Marshal Training in Swindon
Not every company needs an NPORS card for every employee.
Where the employer, client and site arrangements allow it, in-house Excavation Marshal Training and certification may be suitable for employees working within a company’s own controlled environment.
It can provide evidence that training and assessment have taken place, but an in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS card.
Before choosing in-house training, particularly for workers who move between sites or contractors, check what the employer, principal contractor, client and insurer will accept.
Read our In-House Training vs NPORS Accredited Training Guide if you’re comparing the two options.

Your Frequently Asked Questions Answered
You don’t need to already hold an excavator operator qualification to take Excavation Marshal Training. If you’re new to the role, the novice N027 course provides training before assessment. If you’re already experienced, you may be suitable for the test-only route. See our main Excavation Marshal Training Course for the different options.
If the Marshal identifies an unsafe situation, unexpected service, loss of communication or another problem that means the agreed safe system of work can’t continue, the issue should be raised and the work stopped until it can be made safe. Good excavation control depends on people being prepared to act when something isn’t right.
Not automatically. The Excavation Marshal and cable-avoidance equipment user are separate competencies. If the same person is expected to locate underground services using cable avoidance equipment, suitable CAT & Genny Training should also be considered.
The roles require different competencies, and how they are allocated needs to fit the site’s safe system of work. Holding an excavator qualification doesn’t by itself demonstrate competence as an Excavation Marshal. We provide separate 360 Excavator Training and Excavation Marshal Training.
They’re very different jobs. An Excavation Marshal is concerned with excavation activities, ground disturbance, buried services and safe digging arrangements. A Slinger Signaller is involved with lifting operations, including attaching loads and communicating with the lifting-equipment operator.
The course covers the role and responsibilities of the Marshal, excavation hazards, underground services, safe digging, communication, working areas, changes in conditions and what to do when work can no longer continue safely. Candidates then complete the required assessment.
For NPORS N027, the published maximum novice ratio is 3 candidates, while up to 6 experienced workers can be tested on the experienced route. If you’ve got a larger workforce in Swindon, call 01684 297167 and we can discuss how best to arrange the training.
No. The role can be relevant anywhere excavation work needs to be properly controlled, including groundworks, drainage, utility installation, housing developments and civil engineering. What matters is the work being carried out and the responsibilities the person has, not simply the size of the site.
Yes, providing you have a suitable environment for the course and assessment. On-site delivery is one of the main options we offer to Swindon companies. Check our On-Site Plant Training Requirements or call us before booking.
Yes. You don’t need an employer to book the course for you. Individuals can attend our dedicated training centre in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. If you’re unsure which route you need, call 01684 297167 before booking and we’ll help you choose the right one.
