Who Needs Excavation Marshal Training?
Excavations turn up on everything from a small drainage job to major civil engineering and infrastructure work. The size of the job isn’t really the point.
Once the ground is being opened, somebody needs to understand the hazards, the planned method of work and what should happen if the conditions on site aren’t what everyone expected.
Excavation Marshal Training can be relevant to:
- Groundworkers
- Utilities operatives
- Drainage teams
- Civil engineering workers
- Site supervisors
- Excavation Bankspersons
- Construction operatives
- Employees involved with permits to dig
- Workers monitoring excavation activities
- People working alongside mechanical excavators
The employee doesn’t need to be a qualified excavator operator to take the course. If they’re going to operate the machine as well, they’ll need the relevant operator competence. See our 360 Excavator Training Course for novice and experienced operator routes.
Novice, Refresher or Experienced – Which Route Is Right?
We’d rather help you get this right before the course than have somebody turn up for a test they’re not ready to pass.
New to the Role – Novice Training
If the employee hasn’t carried out the Excavation Marshal role before, book the novice training route.
The course takes 1 day with a maximum of 3 candidates.
Training is provided before assessment, so the candidate has the opportunity to learn what’s expected rather than being asked to demonstrate knowledge they haven’t yet been taught.
Our NPORS Novice Training Guide explains how novice training works.
Already Experienced – Test Only
For employees who are already carrying out the role competently, the Experienced Worker Test may be the better route.
It takes 1 day with up to 6 suitable experienced candidates.
There is no training included.
The candidate is being assessed on knowledge and competence they should already have.
If you’re unsure whether your employees are experienced enough, read our NPORS Experienced Worker Test Guide before booking.
Previously Trained – Refresher
If an employee has previously completed Excavation Marshal training but needs to refresh their knowledge, we use the training route rather than treating them as an Experienced Worker Test candidate.
They receive training before completing the assessment, giving them the chance to go back over the important parts of the role.
NPORS N027 Excavation Marshal – Banksperson
The relevant NPORS category is N027 Excavation Marshal – Banksperson. NPORS lists the novice course duration as 1 day. The course is aimed at giving candidates the knowledge and practical understanding needed to carry out the role safely around excavation activities.
That includes understanding what’s supposed to happen before digging starts, what hazards can develop as the excavation progresses and what action should be taken when something isn’t right.
For complete information about N027, certification, price and individual bookings, visit our main Excavation Marshal Training Course.
What Will Candidates Learn?
Excavation Marshal Training covers far more than simply standing where the excavator operator can see you. Candidates need to understand the work taking place around them.
Course content can include:
- Excavation Marshal responsibilities
- Excavation Banksperson duties
- Pre-excavation checks
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Permits to work and permits to dig
- Excavation hazards
- Underground service types
- Service drawings and information
- Safe digging practices
- Communication arrangements
- Emergency procedures
- Safe positioning
- Working and exclusion areas
- CAT & Genny awareness
- Monitoring excavation activities
- Changing site conditions
- When work needs to stop
- Theory assessment
- Practical assessment
These areas align closely with published N027 course objectives, including pre-excavation checks, underground services, communication, emergency procedures, safe positioning and excavation risks.
Underground Services – Don’t Rely on Guesswork
For a lot of Bristol groundworks and utility projects, what’s below ground is one of the biggest concerns. Electricity cables, gas mains, water pipes, fibre, telecommunications, drainage and other buried services may all cross the area being excavated. The fact that you’ve got a drawing doesn’t mean the team can stop thinking.
Plans and records form part of the process, but the actual work also needs suitable service-location methods and safe excavation procedures. Our Working Near Underground Services Guide looks in more detail at utility drawings, buried services, CAT & Genny equipment and safer digging.
What Should Happen Before Excavation Starts?
Before the bucket breaks the ground, the people involved should understand the job they’re about to carry out.
That means knowing the planned excavation area, what service information is available, the expected hazards, how people will communicate and what controls are supposed to be in place.
The Excavation Marshal needs enough understanding of those arrangements to recognise when the work starts moving away from the plan. That might be because a service appears somewhere unexpected, the ground changes, communication with the operator is lost or people enter an area where they shouldn’t be.
The role isn’t about watching the job happen. It’s about staying alert to what’s changing around it.
Does an Excavation Marshal Use a CAT & Genny?
Not necessarily. This is one of the areas that can cause confusion because both competencies are connected with excavation work.
Excavation Marshal Training does not replace CAT & Genny Training.
If an employee is expected to use cable avoidance equipment and a Signal Generator to help locate underground services, they need suitable training for that equipment. We provide separate CAT & Genny Training for companies that need employees trained in service locating. If the same person will carry out both roles, talk to us about the training you actually need.
What If the Service Plans Are Wrong?
Don’t just carry on. Buried services may not always be exactly where the available information suggests.
If something unexpected appears, the actual conditions don’t match the plans or an unidentified service is uncovered, the excavation needs to be dealt with safely before work continues.
This is one reason why the Excavation Marshal needs to understand the limitations of the information being used rather than treating a service drawing as an exact map of what’s underground.
Excavation Marshal vs Plant Banksman
These courses are related to site safety, but they don’t cover the same job.
An Excavation Marshal is focused on excavation activities – ground disturbance, buried services, safe digging arrangements, excavation hazards and what’s happening as the work progresses.
A Plant Banksman is primarily concerned with safely assisting and controlling the movement of construction machinery.
If you’ve got an employee whose job is to guide excavators, dumpers, telehandlers or other moving plant, take a look at our Plant Banksman Training Course.
Some construction and groundworks teams may need employees trained in both roles.
When Should an Excavation Marshal Stop the Job?
If something isn’t right, it needs dealing with before everybody carries on.
Examples could include:
- An unexpected underground service
- A damaged or suspected damaged service
- Information on site not matching the excavation
- Loss of communication with the operator
- People entering the working area
- Unsafe plant positioning
- A change in ground conditions
- The excavation moving beyond the agreed area
- An unidentified object or obstruction
- The agreed method of work no longer being followed
The important thing is that the Marshal understands when the situation needs to be raised rather than assuming somebody else will deal with it.

In-House Excavation Marshal Training Bristol
Some employers don’t require NPORS certification for employees working within their own controlled workplace.
Where the employer, site, client and insurer accept it, in-house Excavation Marshal Training may be an alternative.
It can provide evidence that training and assessment have taken place, but an in-house certificate is not equivalent to an NPORS card.
If employees regularly move between construction sites or work for different clients, check what’s required before choosing the in-house option.
Our In-House Training vs NPORS Accredited Training Guide explains the differences.

Your Frequently Asked Questions Answered
What evidence of training or competence is required will depend on the employer, client and site. The NPORS N027 Excavation Marshal – Banksperson route provides recognised training and assessment for the role. If you’re unsure whether you need NPORS or in-house certification, read our In-House Training vs NPORS Guide.
Yes. The course isn’t restricted to groundworkers or excavator operators. A supervisor can take the course where their duties include responsibility for monitoring excavation activities and they need the relevant knowledge and competence.
Not general Plant Banksman Training. NPORS calls N027 Excavation Marshal – Banksperson, but the course is specifically concerned with excavation activities and their associated hazards. If your employee mainly needs to control moving plant, see our Plant Banksman Training.
Not for the novice route. New candidates can be trained before assessment. The Experienced Worker Test is different because there is no training included; candidates taking that route should already know the job. Our Experienced Worker Test Guide explains the difference.
Permit-to-work arrangements, risk assessments, method statements and pre-excavation checks form part of published N027 course content. The Marshal needs to understand the controls being used on the job rather than simply knowing that paperwork exists.
That depends on the actual work, visibility, layout, communication arrangements, risk assessment and whether the Marshal can properly carry out the role. The priority should be maintaining effective control of the excavation rather than simply allocating one person to as much plant as possible.
The course covers underground-service hazards and safe excavation awareness, but it should not be treated as a replacement for training in cable avoidance equipment. If you’re expected to physically locate services using a CAT and Genny, see our separate CAT & Genny Training Course.
Potentially, yes, providing there is a suitable and safe area where the training and assessment can be carried out without conflicting with live site operations. Check our On-Site Training Requirements and speak to us about your site before booking.
The novice course itself is one day for up to three candidates, while the experienced route is also one day for up to six suitable candidates. NPORS confirms the one-day novice duration for N027. For available dates, call 01684 297167 with your candidate numbers and Bristol site location.
Don’t put them through a test-only route just to see what happens. If they need instruction, the training route is the better option. Tell us what experience your employee has and we’ll help you decide whether novice training or the Experienced Worker Test is appropriate.
