Why Train Your Excavation Marshals at Your Birmingham Site?
For employers with several people to train, bringing the instructor to your workplace can make far more sense than sending everybody away individually. Your employees are already familiar with your working environment, the types of excavation your business carries out and the machinery they’re likely to encounter.
Where suitable arrangements are available, training at your own site can also make the practical element more relevant to the work your team actually does.
On-site training can be particularly useful for Birmingham businesses involved in:
- Groundworks
- Drainage installation
- Utilities
- Civil engineering
- Road and infrastructure work
- Housing developments
- Commercial construction
- Foundations
- Service installation
- Street works
- Site preparation
- General excavation work
Training several employees together can also reduce repeated travelling and time away from productive work.
Before arranging customer-site delivery, check our On-Site Plant Training Requirements so you know what needs to be available on the day.
Who Should Take Excavation Marshal Training?
The course can be suitable for employees who are expected to monitor, control or assist with excavation activities.
That can include:
- Groundworkers
- Excavation Marshals
- Excavation Bankspersons
- Utilities workers
- Civil engineering operatives
- Site supervisors
- Construction operatives
- Excavator operators with additional responsibilities
- Employees involved in permit-to-dig arrangements
- Workers responsible for helping maintain safe excavation procedures
They don’t necessarily need to operate an excavator. What matters is that they understand the excavation, the hazards around it and the responsibilities they’re being asked to take on.
Where employees will actually be operating the machine, separate operator competence is required. We also provide 360 Excavator Training for novice and experienced operators.
Which Excavation Marshal Course Does My Employee Need?
New to the Role – Novice Excavation Marshal Training
If an employee hasn’t previously worked as an Excavation Marshal or doesn’t have enough experience to go directly into assessment, book the novice training route. The novice course takes 1 day and is limited to a maximum of 3 candidates.
Training is provided before assessment, making this the appropriate option for people who need to learn the role rather than simply prove they can already do it. Don’t book an Experienced Worker Test purely because it’s a test-only route if the employee isn’t ready for assessment.
Our NPORS Novice Training Guide explains what to expect from novice training.
Already Experienced – Experienced Worker Test
If your employee is already carrying out Excavation Marshal duties and genuinely has the required knowledge and practical competence, the Experienced Worker Test (EWT) may be suitable. The assessment can be completed in 1 day with up to 6 experienced candidates.
There is no training included in an Experienced Worker Test. Candidates therefore need to arrive ready to demonstrate their existing knowledge and competence.
If you’re unsure whether employees are ready to go straight into assessment, our Experienced Worker Test Guide explains the difference between experienced testing and training.
Excavation Marshal Refresher Training
If employees have been trained previously but their knowledge needs updating, they haven’t carried out the role for some time or your company requires renewed training, they can complete the training route used for novice candidates. We don’t treat refresher training as an Experienced Worker Test.
The purpose is to provide training and bring the candidate’s knowledge back up to the required standard before assessment.
What Does Excavation Marshal Training Cover?
The course is designed around the knowledge needed to help monitor and control excavation work safely.
Subjects can include:
- Excavation Marshal roles and responsibilities
- Excavation Banksperson duties
- Planning and understanding excavation work
- Identifying excavation hazards
- Underground services
- Electricity cables and gas services
- Utility drawings and service information
- Safe digging procedures
- Permit-to-dig systems
- Communication with excavator operators
- Communication with groundworkers
- Exclusion and working areas
- Monitoring excavation progress
- Changes in ground and site conditions
- Recognising unsafe situations
- When excavation work should stop
- CAT & Genny awareness
- Emergency procedures
- Theory and practical assessment
The course is about giving somebody useful knowledge they can apply around real excavation work, not just getting them through a classroom exercise.
Excavation Marshal Training and Underground Services
One of the biggest reasons for controlling excavation work properly is what’s already in the ground. Electricity cables, gas pipes, water mains, drainage, fibre optic cables and telecommunications services may all be present within an excavation area.
A drawing can provide important information, but it shouldn’t simply be treated as proof that a service is exactly where the plan says it is. Safe excavation requires a combination of planning, available service information, locating and identifying buried services and using an appropriate method of excavation.
Our Working Near Underground Services Guide goes into more detail about service drawings, cable avoidance equipment, safe digging and the precautions that should be considered before excavation starts.
The HSE’s HSG47 guidance, Avoiding Danger from Underground Services, also identifies planning the work, locating and identifying buried services and safe excavation as the three basic elements of a safe system of work.
Excavation Marshal Training vs CAT & Genny Training
They’re closely related, but they don’t teach the same thing.
Excavation Marshal Training looks at the wider control and monitoring of excavation activities.
CAT & Genny Training focuses on using cable avoidance equipment and a Signal Generator to help locate underground services.
If an employee is going to physically carry out service detection before the excavator starts digging, they should have suitable training in the equipment they’re expected to use. HSE guidance states that people using cable locating devices should have received thorough training in their use and limitations.
For employees responsible for service locating, see our CAT & Genny Training Course.
For many Birmingham groundworks and utilities teams, having employees with both competencies can make sense because locating services and monitoring the subsequent excavation are separate responsibilities.
Excavation Marshal vs Plant Banksman
These two roles are easily confused because both can involve working around excavators and construction machinery. The main difference is what the person is controlling.
An Excavation Marshal focuses on the excavation itself – safe digging, underground services, ground disturbance, working areas and the way the excavation is progressing.
A Plant Banksman or Plant Marshal is primarily concerned with helping control the movement of construction machinery.
On a busy groundworks project, both roles can be relevant.
For employees who are expected to guide excavators, dumpers, telehandlers or other moving plant, see our Plant Banksman Training Course.
Safe Digging and Service Drawings
Service drawings are an important part of planning excavation work, but they need to be used properly.
Plans may give an indication of the location and number of buried services, but the information needs to be considered alongside suitable locating techniques and safe digging procedures. The excavation team should also understand that site conditions can change.
Previous repairs, additional services, alterations and inaccurate historical information can all affect what is actually found beneath the ground.
Our Working Near Underground Services Guide provides further practical information for plant operators, groundworkers, supervisors and employers involved in excavation.
When Should Excavation Work Stop?
An Excavation Marshal needs to recognise when something has changed and excavation should not simply carry on as normal.
That could include:
- An unexpected service being discovered
- A service appearing somewhere different from the information provided
- Loss of clear communication
- Excavation moving outside the planned area
- Changes to ground conditions
- People entering a controlled working area
- Damage to a service or suspected service
- A change to the agreed method of work
- An unidentified object being uncovered
- Another hazard developing during excavation
The correct response isn’t to guess and hope for the best. Work may need to stop while the situation is checked and suitable controls are agreed before excavation continues.

In-House Excavation Marshal Training Birmingham
Not every Birmingham employer requires an NPORS card. Where appropriate, Vally Plant Training can discuss in-house Excavation Marshal Training and certification for businesses that need evidence their employees have received suitable training and assessment for defined internal work.
An in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Whether in-house certification is suitable depends on the requirements of the employer, client, site, principal contractor and insurer. If your employees regularly work across third-party construction sites, check what certification those sites require before choosing an in-house option purely on cost.
Our In-House Training vs NPORS Training Guide explains the difference.
