How Long Does 360 Excavator Training Take?

The length of a 360 excavator course depends mainly on your previous operating experience.

Complete beginners can require up to five days of novice excavator training, while experienced operators who already have sufficient practical ability may be suitable for an NPORS Experienced Worker Test.

Refresher training is also available for existing qualified operators who need to update their knowledge or practical operating skills.

NPORS 360 Excavator Test for Experienced Operators

Already an experienced excavator operator and don’t need a full training course?

The NPORS 360 Excavator Test, also known as the Experienced Worker Test (EWT), is designed for competent operators who already have sufficient practical experience and can operate a 360 excavator safely without instruction.

At our Tewkesbury training centre, the NPORS 360 Excavator Experienced Worker Test starts from £360 + VAT and can be completed for the appropriate Above 10 Tonnes or Below 10 Tonnes excavator category.

During the NPORS excavator test, candidates must demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills expected of a competent operator, including pre-use checks, safe travelling and positioning, excavating, trenching, backfilling, grading, loading and correct shutdown procedures.

Vally Plant Training recommends candidates have at least one year’s relevant excavator operating experience before attempting the test. Someone operating an excavator every day may develop competence differently from somebody who has only used one occasionally, so suitability should be based on genuine ability as well as time spent operating.

The Experienced Worker Test is an assessment of existing competence, not a shortened novice excavator course. If you still require instruction or assistance to operate the machine safely, novice training is the appropriate route.

Which 360 Excavator Category Do I Need?

Choosing the correct excavator category matters because your NPORS operator card should reflect the type and size of machine you are trained and assessed to operate.

360 Excavator Below 10 Tonnes

The Below 10 Tonnes category covers 360 excavators with an operating weight below 10 tonnes, excluding the separate Micro Excavator category.

This is a common choice for operators working with compact and mid-sized excavators across construction, groundworks, drainage, utilities and landscaping.

360 Excavator Above 10 Tonnes

The Above 10 Tonnes category is for larger 360 excavators over 10 tonnes and is commonly required by operators working on larger construction, earthmoving, civil engineering and infrastructure projects.

Micro Excavator – Up to 1 Tonne

Using a 360 Excavator for Lifting Operations

Using an excavator to lift freely suspended loads introduces additional risks compared with normal digging operations.

Upgrade Your NPORS Red Card to a Blue Competent Operator Card

Experienced excavator operators who are working in the occupation may be able to progress from an NPORS Red Trained Operator Card to a Blue Competent Operator Card by completing the relevant Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ and meeting the applicable card requirements.
