Experienced operators who already have sufficient practical ability may be suitable for an NPORS Experienced Worker Test, with prices from £360 + VAT for Below 10 Tonnes and £360 + VAT for Above 10 Tonnes.
Where an NPORS Operator Card and registration are required, the current fee is £45 + VAT per person.

The price of excavator training varies considerably across the UK because not every candidate needs the same course.
Someone who has never operated an excavator needs structured practical training. An operator who has been using excavators competently for years may only need to demonstrate that competence through an Experienced Worker Test.
Machine category matters too.
An operator trained and assessed on Below 10 Tonnes is not simply interchangeable with somebody assessed for the Above 10 Tonnes category. If your job requires larger excavators, make sure you book the correct category from the beginning.

Why Does 360 Excavator Training Cost So Much?
A genuine novice excavator course involves considerably more than sitting in a classroom and completing a short test.
The cost has to cover access to the excavator, a suitable practical training area, fuel, instructor time, course administration and the time needed to develop the candidate’s operating skills before assessment.
Excavator training is also highly practical.
A novice operator needs time on the controls to become comfortable with machine movements, coordination, digging, trenching, backfilling, levelling, travelling, positioning and safe shutdown procedures.
At our Tewkesbury training centre, novice 360 excavator training is available one-to-one, so the candidate receives dedicated machine and instructor time rather than spending most of the course watching several other trainees operate.
That naturally costs more than a short assessment for somebody who can already operate the machine competently.
Novice Excavator Training Cost vs Experienced Operator Test Cost
This is where the difference in price becomes much easier to understand.
Novice operators
A complete beginner may require up to five days of training.
The instructor is teaching the candidate how to operate safely from the beginning and developing the practical ability required before assessment.

Experienced operators
An experienced excavator operator does not necessarily need to pay for a full novice programme.

“360 digger licence” is a common search term, but there is not a single government-issued workplace licence for operating a 360 excavator.
People often use terms such as digger licence, excavator licence, digger ticket and excavator ticket when they actually mean operator training and recognised certification.
If you take the NPORS route, the cost depends on whether you need novice training or an experienced operator assessment and which excavator category you require.

Above 10 Tonnes vs Below 10 Tonnes – Which Course Do I Need?
Choosing the right excavator category is more important than simply choosing the cheapest course.
Below 10 Tonnes
This category is intended for excavators below 10 tonnes, excluding the separate Micro Excavator category.
It is commonly relevant to compact and mid-sized machines used for groundworks, drainage, utilities, landscaping and smaller construction projects.
Above 10 Tonnes
This category is required where the operator needs to work with excavators above 10 tonnes.
Larger machines are widely used across civil engineering, bulk excavation, infrastructure, demolition, earthmoving and major construction projects.
If future employment may require you to operate larger excavators, make sure you understand the category requirement before booking solely on price.
Micro Excavators
Micro excavators up to 1 tonne are treated as their own category.
They may look straightforward because of their size, but compact dimensions can introduce their own stability and operating considerations.

Employers with several candidates may find on-site excavator training more practical.
Training your operators at your own workplace can reduce employee travel and allows candidates to work with machinery and site conditions relevant to their normal job.
The customer must provide suitable machinery, a safe practical area and the documentation and equipment required for the course.

Can I Get a Cheap Digger Ticket?
